Re: [seakayaking-35] Anyone interested in kayak camping?

I went to Cypress Island last year and it is really nice. It is definitely worth going to if you have some experience.

The once a month camping trip in the summer months that Ann suggests sounds like a good idea. I'm going to be out of town for most of July so I won't be able to make it then, but I'd  be interested in going out on another trip sometime in August.

If anyone wants to go on June 16-17 then let me know and I'll add you to the list of people for that trip.

Thanks, Randy, great point. While I am confident in my own open water safety
skills, I am not a qualified guide so I cannot assume liability for the
group's safety. So unless there is someone willing and able to guide a trip
to Cypress Island, we'll have to save that for another time and find
something a little easier so anyone can join in.

Just to remind people that unless there is a guide along and people
are in stable, double sea kayaks, an open water crossing is no place
for a beginner. Unless someone on the trip has guide experience, I'd
suggest making this trip for intermediate/advanced kayakers (unless
someone wants to organize a 'tour', which is mucho expensive). There
are lots of safer paddles to do than this for novices. I'm hoping that
we can have trips such as those as well. I'm just thinking about
peoples safety and well-being.
If a trip is planned for a weekend besides the 16 and 17th, I could make it.

So... How about the weekend of June 30th - July 1st? Is anyone interested

in Cypress Island in the San Juans? We'd launch from Anacortes; I hear it's
a great overnight trip. I found a tour company that runs a trip, but we'd do
it on our own of course (see link). Meals could be determined by how many
people actually go. If it's only a few, it would be fun to share meals.
Patrick, this was your idea, are you available that weekend?

(Rosemary, I'm also new to this group. Most of my friends are runners and

triathletes. Few of them own kayaks so I need a few new friends! :))

Cheers,

Here is the farmer's almanac for June, we will want to keep an eye on the

weather, don't want to be paddling in small craft warnings.

June 2007
1st-3rd. Fine weather. 4th-7th. Unsettled conditions. 8th-11th. Gusty

winds, drier, clearer weather. 12th-15th. Showery. 16th-19th. Fair skies
deteriorate to stormy conditions. 20th-23rd. Fair weather returns.
24th-27th. Unseasonable warmth, showery for much of Washington, Oregon.
28th-30th. Still quite warm, but drier.

I also have a sea kayak and have done extensive overnight trips. I will

take a look at the tide and current tables and look for a chart. I am new to
this area, so if anyone can refer me to a good chart for the area or the
best current station to reference for Puget Sound I'd appreciate it.

I'm assuming we will be doing our own cooking or did we want o pool meals?

I'm new to this group, what about every one else?

Thanks,
Rosemary

Hi Patrick,

Yes, I'd love to do an overnighter. I do have a touring kayak and have
never gone camping with it. I'm not available for that weekend though.
I take it you have experience doing open water crossings? Scott and I
did a paddle to Blake Island this last weekend and it was great. We
just did it for a day trip although it would have been a great place
for an overnighter. Logistically, that was really easy and relatively
cheap.

Hey, is anyone in this group interested in kayak camping? I'd like to do
a weekend trip to camp on either Saddlebag Island or Hope Island (other
suggestions welcome). I'm thinking of June 16-17 but I'm open to other
dates to depending on when people are available. Let me know if you're
interested in something like this and we'll set something up.
