For night practice, it would be helpful to have a 1' x 6" strip of reflective tape on each side of the bow of your boat and also one on top of the stern of the boat.  This is listed as one of the requirements for the 2-day Paddling Strokes & Rescue Techniques class offered by Kayak Academy.
This way if your head-lamp quits, the group can still locate your boat.
