It is such a rude thing NOT showing up for this kind of event when you are eating up the time and effort of volunteers but also wasting the spot when there are waiting list.
And then please don't think that " oh, they took my deposit, so I don't have to show up if I don't want to..it looks a little cloudy so...". Handling deposit by itself is a work, and they could have tought someone deserves better!!

I hope you're all enjoying this wonderful weather. I am sending this to all htee groups I manage so pardon the non appicable portions as the theme is the same. We have had some fairly
minor but consistant problems with regard to treating our organizers with
the appropriate levels of respect for the great free services they
Within the Sea Kayaking Group we were receiving free skills instruction
from Bob Burnett and others at the Sea Kayak academy and for those
sessions they were not charging their usual $180+ class session rate with
the objective of providing better skills to new kayakers so that they can
more safly ejoy their new found sport. During the last several sessions we
averaged about 50% no shows. This prevented people who were interested
from being able to sign up and reduced the interest of the volunteer
instructors in providing instruction. I am considering some changes to the
way the site works to address these and will outline them below:
Within the Human Powered group, I had an individual who treated our
European trip more as a paid guided trip ands as a result they were not
satisifed with the on the fly logisitical changes and refused to reimburse
me and other trip members for their lodging and railway ticket expenses.
This logic could also hold for the sea kayaking group, where about once
per year we end with a trip where a storm comes in and increases the sea
state beyond what I percieve to be a safe level for the groups skills, as
a result, on two different occasions(once in 2007 and once in 2008), we
hired a charter to move us back to the mainland and split the expense
amongst the group members, In contrast to last weeks bike trip, my
expectations were met, as everyone shouldered their fair share of the
Within the GOGO's we havn't done any events that have left the organizers
holding the bag. Thanks everyone.
Let's keep in mind that all of the organizers are volunteers, none of us
make any money of these events, so please show a proper level of
consideration and respect. If you expect a guided trip level of service,
or expect to be able to RSVP and not show up, please look for it elsewhere
as an informal group of volunteers has a difficult time doing more than
they already do. We want to do the most that we can for those the
appreciate and respect our contributions.
The changes I am considering, but hope not to have to impliment. Requiring
deposits to RSVP for events, generally you would get your deposit back
once you arrive on time and do your share for the event. Hopefully
everyone can take this message to heart and we can avoid requiring
deposits for events, as I know that for some of you this would be
difficult to afford and based on that principle I have avoided this
approach since I started managing these groups.
Let's keep up the great comaraderie, fun events, friendshps and learning
Thanks - Saul
