Announcing a new Meetup for Seattle Area Sea Kayaking Meetup Group!
What: San Juans trip August 28-30 - experience required -
When: August 28,[masked]:15 PM
6300 Sunset Ave
Anacortes, WA 98221
IThis is a beautiful trip with what I expect to be fairly high mileage(plan on 10-14 miles for each leg of the trip) , higher speed each day. We will probably fight the current a bit on Friday afternoon, since slack will occur at about 2:30pm and the ebb will be against us but will be pretty weak. With Strawberry Island closed to camping, the main plan is to paddle to Spencer Spit on Shaw Island Friday night and then depending on the wind forecast, either go to Friday Harbor/Turn Island for the next nights camping or use a bail out at Orcas Island and catch the ferry back from Orcas or San Juan. Because I find dawdling in shipping channels to be fairly stressful, I like to cross quickly, so I'd appreciate it if you consider not only your boat handling skills but also your speed when you sign up for this trip, if you're typically in the front third on our group paddles, then you're probably OK.
Everyone that signs up will need to have demonstrated their self rescue to myself or to one of the assistant organizers prior to the trip.
Friday we need to launch at about 1pm, Saturday morning at 7am, Sunday morning at 7:30am. I will adjust these times based on the current offsets for each point, right now this trip is planned based on the current forecast for Rosario Strait, and some of these offsets may be in the 30 to 90 minute range.
We will do group meals and I will assign meal teams about one week out.
I can provide loaner kayaks, primarily tandems to those of you that need to borrow a kayak.
We can carpool from my house, I will bring the loaner kayaks on the trailer so that we can leave on time. We'd be leaving my house at about noon.
Looking forward to the trip - Saul
