Mt. Si by bus!

If you heard rumors that the summit of Mt. Si was reachable by bus, but are not sure how it's done, this is the hike for you. We will meet in downtown Seattle and ride the 554 to Issaquah, followed by the 209 to North Bend. From North Bend, we will walk the Snoqualmie Valley Trail to the Little Si trailhead, then ascend big Si via the Boulder Garden Loop and the Old Trail. The Snoqualmie Valley Trail is extremely flat, but don't don't be fooled. As soon as we hit the real trailhead, the hike will immediately become quite steep, gaining 3,400 feet in just over 3 miles.

This hike on well-maintained trail the entire way. There will be no bushwhaking, but the trail may be muddy in places and some amount of snow is likely at and near the top, so please be prepared. On a clear day, excellent views are available from the top of Seattle and the Cascades.

Distance: 9 miles round trip
Elevation gain: About 3400 feet
Hiking time: About 4 - 5 hours, round trip.

The bus schedules work best if we do this hike in the afternoon. Here is our itinerary:

Board bus #554 at 2nd Ave. and Pike St. downtown - 10:53 AM
Arrive downtown Issaquah - 11:30 AM (*)
Board bus #209 to North Bend - 11:41 AM
Arrive North Bend and begin hike - 12:16 PM
Arrive viewpoint at top of Mt. Si - 3:00 PM
Depart top of Mt. Si - 3:30 PM
Board bus #209 back to North Bend - 5:37 PM (**)
Arrive downtown Issaquah - 6:25 PM
Board bus #554 back to Seattle - 6:35 PM
Arrive downtown Seattle - 7:05 PM

(*) Indoor restrooms are available in downtown Issaquah while we switch buses to and from North Bend. Those who wish may meet us in Issaquah or on the bus at any stop the 554 or 209 passes by along the way.

(**) Alternate #209 trips are available leaving North Bend one hour earlier and later and 4:37 and 6:37. Depending on the length on the wait for the bus back and the wishes of the group, we may decide to get snacks or dinner in North Bend before returning to Seattle.

We will not be climbing the haystack on this trip. We will eat lunch and enjoy the view at the base of the haystack.

since i won't be available on 4/6, i went ahead and did it today because of the good weather. here is a quick report.

it took me about 5 hrs and that includes some trail running. if you want to relax and stay at top of haystack for the view, 5.5 hrs is about the amount of time you need (i was slower going up).

old Mt Si trail is very steep in some sections. there is still substantial amount of snow near the top but it's manageable with just hiking boots. hiking poles will be good ideas.

climbing haystack is not easy. with the snow it can get a little dicey. leave your big backpacks and poles at the bottom of haystack. you will have a much easier time climbing it. it's almost impossible to descend with a big backpack.

hope you will be have weather as gorgeous as today. happy climbing!

This trail is a good one (I've done it a handful of times) but I have a 6:30 deal to get to that night, so i'll have to miss it this time. Have a great time!
