Cougar Mountain Traverse

This is one of the best transit hikes in our region. We will begin by riding the 554 from downtown Seattle to Issaquah Transit Center, then head west through the trails of Couger Mountain and Coal Creek Park, eventually making our way to South Bellevue P&R, where we will ride the 550 back to Seattle.

This hike is about 12 mile in length and gains about 1,500 feet in elevation. This hike is has about a mile or so of sidewalk; the rest is all trail.

For those of you that have been wondering all your life just how it's possible to hike Couger Mountain by bus, this is the hike you are looking for.

Schedule:

Depart 2nd and Pine (bus #554) - 8:28 AM
Arrive Issaquah Transit Center and begin hike - 9:06 AM
Arrive South Bellevue P&R - ~3:00 PM
Arrive downtown Seattle - ~3:30 PM

Hey Eric! I went on a pretty long hike yesterday and did something funny to my right ankle. I thought I could sleep it off but couldn't and am worried what 12 miles could do to it. Super bummed I'm missing this one but I'll be at the next!

    Hi everyone--

I'm going to change my RSVP to "No" this time--I ended up having to work very late and I don't think I'll be up early enough to make the 8:28 bus for this hike :-( I may see some of you on the trail later.

Dang! I sure hate to miss this one. I'll be passing over Siskiyou Summit on I-5 from Oregon to California while you're on this hike.

Hi! This is going to be my first hike with you guys and I'm really looking forward to it! Would it be alright if I hopped on the same bus from the Mercer Island P&R?

    Hi, Eric!
Should we meet at 2nd Ave & Stewart or 2nd Ave & Pike?

    January 2, 2014

    • Eric

The bus stop is on 2nd Ave. between Pine and Stewart St. It is not next to Pike.

Is this the same route you did in January and this summer? I think you said most of the elevation was on the sidewalk before the trail starts.

    • Eric

Yes - this is the same route we did in January last year.

Is there a bus we can take from Bellevue back to Issaquah?

      December 29, 2013

    • Eric

To answer your question, yes, you can meet us in Issaquah. However, no, there is not a direct bus to Issaquah from our end point in Bellevue. If you are coming by car from the Eastside, your best bet is to park at Eastgate P&R and join us on the 554 bus on the way to Issaquah (About 8:50 Saturday morning). To get home, you can catch the 240 bus about 2 miles before the end of the hike, and it will take you right back to your car. (The 240 bus runs every 30 minutes. The hike will be taking us right by the bus stop, so you should have no trouble finding it).

I would love to try it out but I don't think I'm quite ready. I'll do some of the other hikes and hopefully this one will come round again in a few months.

I should skip this one. Hiking in snow might be challenging for me.

Some clarifications on what to expect: Coming out of Issaquah, The first 2-3 miles or so of hiking will be pretty steep - the bulk of the day's 1,500 elevation gain will happen there. Once we reach mile 3, it's a slow, gentle descent to the end, with a few ups and downs along the way. Depending on the weather, some amount of snow on the trail is possible at higher elevations, but it is unlikely to be anything significant. We will be under the trees for almost the entire hike, but with winter weather, good raingear is highly recommended.

The Cougar Mountain trail system is full of junctions and can be difficult to navigate. We will stop and regroup at all junctions so that nobody gets lost. Once we leave Issaquah Transit Center, there are no "bail-out" buses along the hike until we are close to done, so please be prepared to handle the steepness of the first 3 miles and to go the entire distance after that.

Thank you all for signing up and I look forward to seeing you all.
