Mt. Si bus hike

We tried this once in April and got hit by pouring rain. Let's try it again and take advantage of the season for better weather.

We will begin our trip by taking the 554 from downtown Seattle to Issaquah, followed by the 208 to North Bend. From downtown North Bend, it's a 2-mile flat hike, mostly down the Snoqualmie Valley Trail, to the Little Si trailhead.

From there, the trail starts going up and becomes steep.  We will ascend to the summit of Big Si via the Old Trail, then retrace our steps back to North Bend, to take the 208 to Issaquah and the 554 back to Seattle. Optional post-hike dinner in Issaquah for all who are interested.

Most people who hike Mt. Si use the new trail. Compared to the new trail, the old trail is both steeper and a lot less crowded. Hiking boots and poles are recommended for this trip.  Please consider the weather when deciding what to bring and make sure you have plenty of water.  This is a strenuous hike, with a total elevation gain of 3,700 feet, so please make sure you are in a good enough physical condition to handle this before signing up.

Total Distance: About 11 miles
Elevation gain: About 3700 feet

Schedule:

Meet at bus stop downtown at 2nd Ave. and Stewart St. - 9:15 AM
Board bus 554 to Issaquah - 9:27 AM
Arrive Issaquah Transit Center - 9:55 AM
Board bus 208 to North Bend - 10:40 AM (*)
Arrive North Bend - 11:15 AM

Return buses leave North Bend at 40 minutes past the hour.  I expect to arrive back in Issaquah around 6:00, but please be prepared if it ends up later.  Optional Indian dinner in Issaquah for all who are interested after the hike.

(*) Due to the large time gap between buses, we will not be waiting for the 208 at the transit center. Instead, we will walk about 10 minutes to a nearby shopping center, where we can buy lunch to take on the trail and use the facilities. We can catch the 208 directly from the shopping center, so no need to walk back to the transit center. If you want to join us in Issaquah, please board the 208 at whichever stop suits you best, and we will find you on the bus.

*** Due to the failure of proposition 1, bus service to North Bend is likely to be severely cut back starting this September.  If you haven't yet tried taking the bus to Si, the time to do it is now.  ***

I would be joining you guys in Issaquah. Which shopping center do you have in mind ? I could meet you guys there too. There is a shopping center on NW Gilman Blvd (where they have the QFC, Starbucks, etc.). Is that the place you guys plan on going down ?

    • Eric

I'm guessing around 6 or 7. But it's hard to know for sure, so please avoid scheduling anything important the evening after the hike.

Glad a spot opened - it's been tough to commit lately.

I would love to join! Why is there a waitlist if we are using the bus system?

    April 29, 2014

    • Eric

The size limit is due to the hike itself, not the bus ride. It's mostly about making it easier to keep track of where everybody is and minimize the amount of waiting for others.

Eric, Is it still true that we should bring yak traks or other traction devices - is there still snow at the top, do you know?

    April 27, 2014

    • Eric

By this point, the snow on top of Si should be pretty much melted out, so no traction devices should be necessary.
