Do you enjoy travel but put it off because it's not affordable as one person, not fun traveling alone, or too much work to organize by yourself? Travel may be a day trip, a weekend outing, or a longer vacation overseas. If you are single, divorced, widowed, or your partner or friends don't like to travel, this is the group for you. It can open the door to the expansion of horizons, personal enrichment, and the rejuvenation of mind and body that travel brings.
This group is for people 40 years of age and older, residing in the Puget Sound Area, who like to travel with one or few people and appreciate the companionship and cost sharing. Having a travel companion does not mean you have to share a bedroom--you may book lodging so each person has their own bedroom and bathroom. Nor does it mean that you do everything together--you may arrange some independent sightseeing or time alone during the trip.
This group is especially well suited for those who like to organize their own trip (independent travel), which provides more flexibility of time and sightseeing than a commercial tour and may cost less; for those who want to find a roommate for an organized tour or cruise; and for travel professionals who wish to advertise tours to a more targeted audience. This group is not suitable for those who want to travel alone/solo. Please note: members assume total responsibility for choosing travel companions and traveling with them.
We have meetups now and then over dinner at a restaurant, with a theme such as "Urban travel enthusiasts," as well as meetups at a cultural event with a strong connection to another country or culture, such as "an evening of Russian music." These themed meetups facilitate meeting members with similar interests who are potential friends or future travel companions. There are no membership dues or charges to attend a meetup, other than the cost of your meal or price of admission to a cultural event. We usually do not hold these themed meetups during the summer months, but members are welcome to hold their own meetups to meet travel companions.
Because joining the group is not monitored (meaning anyone can join), if you are seeking a travel companion for a future trip or to share a room during a tour, it is best and safest to hold your own meetup and connect with interested members. This is easy to do, guidance is provided, and you make a $25 financial contribution towards group dues. Such financial contributions from members and from travel professionals advertising tours help this group continue and be there for you and others in the future. Holding your own meetup to meet travel companions for a trip is both the best use of the group and the most effective use of the Meetup organization's software.
The Meetup organization charges Group Organizers semi-annual dues for hosting any meetup group. Some travel meetup groups are a marketing arm of a travel company, which may be out of state, and the company pays the group dues. The Travel Companions group is a true community group/resource. There is no affiliation with a business, which also means that there is no agenda to sell you anything. Being a community group, it depends on members and tour advertisers for support. Your financial contributions are paid directly to the Meetup organization, and after an 8% charge by Meetup, are applied to directly to group dues.
Announcements of tours are meant to provide members with options and opportunities, as well as convenience. They are not necessarily endorsements of a tour company or a tour. Please note: members assume total responsibility for joining advertised tours.
Travel professionals or companies are welcome to advertise tours to this group and reach an audience of over nearly 400 people who are interested in travel. Such tour announcements includes a description and photos, and you send further information directly to the members who express interest. You may need to join the group temporarily. There is a modest financial charge that is applied directly to the Meetup organization's group dues. For details, please contact the Group Organizer (blue envelope icon in the middle of the left-hand column).
Join us and enjoy the benefits and joys of travel and companionship!
Please note: the Group Organizer will not be available beginning of October to mid-November 2015.
