Underwater Hockey is a fast, fun sport for women and men of all ages. Strictly non-contact, the game uses fitness, finesse and team tactics. Teams are co-ed and range from competitive athletes who travel to tournaments around the world to people who play just for fun.
6 players on each team play on the pool bottom with blunt sticks roughly a foot long to dribble and pass a plastic covered lead puck into the opposing team’s goal (same as ice-hockey). 4 additional players on each side continually substitute in to keep teams fresh and game tempo high. Players wear fins, masks and snorkels (no SCUBA tanks !) and repeatedly hold their breath as they dive to the pool bottom to steal the puck, receive a pass, or swim the puck forward.
Fast game tempo makes long dives impossible, hence effective play means using lots of teamwork and clever passing to keep everyone as fresh as possible (No puck hogs).
Our Seattle team practices together locally 2x a week, but many members also travel to tournaments around the country all year long. Some have even won medals while representing the US at worldwide tournaments.
Once you try it, you'll never lap-swim again. Come give it a try! Also, check out this really cool video explaining the sport.
When? Tuesday Nights, 7:45-9:45 PM; Saturday Nights, 6:00-8:00 PM during most of the year. Summer hours change up a bit.
