I think I'm ready to take the plunge and get me some chickens. I've got lots of room. My idea is to convert an old camper, the type that goes on the back of a pickup truck, into a chicken coop! A screen bottom would allow manure to fall below, and the coop could be moved easily to "inoculate" different parts of the yard. A cool paint job to placate the neighbors as a finishing touch, then 50x50 bird netting, and a fence to keep out the hawks, coyotes, raccoons, rats, eagles, and what have you.
Then, in my spare time (!) I would like to set up a 10 x 20 raised bed/greenhouse adjacent to the chicken area.
I'm open to innovations like aquaponics, or a huge plumbed compost pile to provide heat for the greenhouse, passive solar heat banks, or whatever we can dream up.
Of course, I could use lots of help on these projects, and there would be more produce and eggs than I would be using. I would be open to group efforts as well as longer term commitment by individuals. I'm on the eastern edge of West Seattle- Anyone interested? Email me at [masked]
