Fruit Tree Gleaning

  • July 20, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • Near Volunteer Park

Capitol Hill is home to many fruit trees that are not always fully harvested by their owners. Sustainable Capitol Hill is partnering with these owners to harvest the fruit that would otherwise go to waste. This fruit is donated to food banks in the area, to help provide fresh produce for the food insecure. Join us as we glean the fruit from a tree near Volunteer Park on Sunday. We'll have some ladders and fruit pickers, but if you have any tools , feel free to bring them. You may also want to bring gloves and eye gear (sometimes leaves and things fall from the trees while we're looking up at the fruit.) Please RSVP and allow meetup messages from non-administrators (I am not an administrator on this group - you can also RSVP here, where I am an admin: http://www.meetup.com/Sustainable-Capitol-Hill/events/195095702/). We will message all participants the day before the event.

Is it for donation to Food Bank, or we can bring some home;)??

The majority of pristine apples will go to the food bank, but volunteers can take a few home. Damaged apples are free for the taking, great for apple sauce or cider pressing.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
