Seattle - Data Vis/Infographics Study Group

TOPIC FOR THE TUES 3/19 Seattle study group:

Main theme: Color: what it's good for, how to use it to visually represent change, comparisons and differences
- Gallery Walk: Look at datavis/infographics and evaluate how they use color; as we look at these we'll create our own set of guidelines & principles for using color with data
- Dataset Challenge: We'll take a small dataset, create datavis using the color guidelines & principles we just defined. I'll provide the paper and markers, you be ready to play...hmmm maybe I'll bring fingerpaints......

Assignment: Bring an infographic or datavis that uses color either successfully or unsuccessfully; be ready to talk about how it uses color, how well it works and why.

If anyone has a work-in-progress and would like some feedback from the group, please let me know!

What to bring: fully-charged laptop,

Also, take a look at these articles to get a leg up on the subject:

I think it was @sam mathews who said: Make sure it looks OK in grayscale. This accomplishes 2 things:
    * Different parts are still distinguishable when somebody prints in B&W, which most likely they will.
    * Color-blind readers can distinguish between the different parts, too.

I have a work-in-progress. Can I just bring it on my laptop or must I post it here? It's a set of color questions.

I just realized I have a scheduling conflict next Tuesday, so I don't think I can make it. You're welcome to play with my assignment. Just let me know what you conclude about it. Thanks.

Not sure how to send in my homework, so here's a link. It's an example of a situational assessment from site I helped to develop, Crowdegy.com. I don't know if this is a good or poor use of color. I'll let the group decide.

Sure, you can play with it here: you can go to dev.crowdegy.com and take the demo survey, you'll see a similar one.

    • Lora M.

Ok thank you for your answer. I have some experience creating graphs and working with data but I need more practice as well.
