Seattle - Data Vis/Infographics Study Group

Let's dive into the latest version of MS-Excel and try out PowerPivot, PowerView and maybe even Data Explorer and GeoFlow. Maggie Sparkman, with assistance from Amy Forstrom, Will Thompson and Crystal Ju, will demo the new tools and then we'll do some hands-on work with them, too.

Before we start with Excel that evening, we'll take about 30 minutes to look at our works-in-progress. Let me know if you have a dataviz or infographic that could use a little TLC from the study group; heck, I might even bring one that I'm working on, I'd love to get some feedback :-)

See you in May!

One more insight: Nathan and I talked to Maggie and decided that the most basic 'unit' in PowerView is a relationship (in Word it's a character, in Excel its a cell). The joy in PowerView is the ease with which you expose and depict the strength, size or frequency of any given relationship. What do you think?

I think I'd call the basic units are the results of all the formulas -- those explicitly created in the data model and implicitly created by Power View on the fly.

Hey, all - I posted the Excel workbook with the data from Sandy's brother's bar. It's on the Files page, http://www.meetup.com/Seattle-V.... Play on!

Familiar with Excel 2010 charting & pivot tables? Excel 2013 PowerView is a game-changer. Maggie, Sandy & Will were excellent as they described tenets of the new Excel, did a demo, and worked 1-on-1 with us as we tried PowerView on our own.

The Basics: Click PowerView on the toolbar to open a 'canvas' with your data in a table. Select the table, pick a chart type from the toolbar and table changes to a chart. Use the panes on the right to add/ remove variables, apply filters, tiles, slices and other tools that show different aspects of the data.

    My favorites
    - click an element in one chart on a canvas and the related data in all other charts gets highlighted
    - Put a variable in the 'Tiles' field and the levels of the variable will appear at the top of the chart - easy-peasy to click through these to get views by level.

What do you like about PowerView?

Gack - didn't get the join.me going and no phone conference set up - I am so sorry; please forgive me - I'll try to get Google hangout going for the next session.

Is anyone planning on hosting a google+ hangout for the lame people (like myself) that can't make it in person? I'll offer a bribe of two beers before/after the next meet-up :)

Take a look at my comment below, the one labelled 'New Option'; you can also attend the meet-up via conference call and join.me :-)

NEW OPTION FOR COMING TO THIS STUDY GROUP

Attending in person is great; the discussions, side conversations and community are one of the best parts of these meetings.

That said, this Tuesday, if you can't come in person, you can attend via conference call and screen share.
    Call-in:[masked] (participant code:[masked])
    Screenshare: https://join.me/leah.kaufman

We'll do this for the 1st half of the meeting during the demo. Forthe 2nd half, the hands-on practice with Excel 2013, I will turn off the conference call and screen sharing.

Here's an option if you want to participate in the hands-on part of the evening: Find someone who's attending the meeting in person and arrange to call them when the 2nd half starts. Use your phones or Voip to to talk each other and Skype, Google hangout, join.me (there's a free version available) or any other screen sharing tool to see what you or they are trying out.

Thanks and see you this Tuesday!

IF you're new to the group, here's instructions on where to park and how to get into the building:

Since you need a cardkey to get into both the building and Getty's 4th floor office, I will be in the lobby of 605 5th Ave S at 6:15 to let you into the building. At 6:30 PM to we'll take the elevators up to the 4th floor. I'll send someone back to the lobby at about 6:40 to collect anyone who arrives late. After that, please call me at[masked] and we'll send someone to fetch you.

You can park in the building's confusing underground parking garage (entrance on 4th Ave. S. on the east side of the street, btween Airport Way and Jackson) and I will validate your parking ticket. Otherwise there's street parking or taking the bus tunnel to the International District stop. If you get lost, just give me a call.

Hi Leah! Here I am being annoying again. :) These features are in version Excel 2013?

    April 23, 2013

    • Will T.

They are! Specifically, you need the Professional Plus version if either Office 2013 or Office 365... We'll make sure we bring plenty of laptops with it installed for everyone to play with.

    • Leah K.

Woo-hoo! Thanks Will, can't wait to try out the new features!
