Go gather oysters from Hood Canal and eat them

5306 32nd Ave S (map)

Selected By: Kiliii Yu
Oysters are delicious and will make you happier and sexier. The day before the wild foods potluck. We can meet at Kiliii's house near Seward Park (free parking) to carpool to Twanoh Park on Hood Canal. Bring your shellfish license and a bucket.

So for oyster harvesting we'll need: Some buckets! Some oyster knives, if you've got one bring it. A couple of strong butter knives or even a small pry bar to get them off the rocks. You'll want some water shoes like aqua socks (they're like $20) or at least some Chacos.

I just checked the tides for this day and realized that the low for the day is at 6:30pm. I think that probably means I should move the oyster gathering to the day previous and we should go around 3pm on Saturday, get back around 8 or 9.

I think a carpool sounds like an excellent idea. My street has lots of free parking, I'll add the address.

As filter feeders, should we be worried about red-tides causing toxic buildup in oysters in the pacific NW? We had to be really careful on the gulf and atlantic coasts to avoid harvesting oysters with red-tide toxin. As far as I'm aware, there is no antidote. I think we should be okay with limpets though, since they don't filter feed.

Scott, oysters are subject to red tides but they only occur in summer and oysters purge the toxins relatively quickly. I checked the WA biotoxin page for the most recent update and it's clear. Only butter and purple varnish clams hold the toxins long enough to worry about in winter.

Kiliii Yu do you think you will be planning another oyster gathering in th near future. Don't know if I'll make the potluck. I don't gather from the wilderness as I don't know what you can eat and what you can't that is why I wanted to join your group.

Kilii--do we need to bring (if we already have one) or purchase a shellfish/seaweed license to partake in this activity?

Yes I totally forgot about posting this... A shellfish license is recommended, WA sells 3 the annual license for $12, not too bad. You can get them online now too at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/

Folks, I shifted the time up an hour because I'm seeing the weather is gonna give us very little light and I anticipate people being a little late at rendezvous. So let's try to meet at 3pm.
