Game Design/Development Collaboration

  • March 16, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Gathering up designers, developers, programmers, artists, etc. to collaborate of creating a full length playable game on any engine (based on preference such as a Unity, UDK, classic engines, etc.) within 8 hours. I've had some experience with that back in Chicago during my four years at Columbia College. It's fun and worthwhile for the experience, plus you'll get to know more about your teammates.

Of the 40-odd people coming, can we get an idea how many are:
developers? (and how many of these are GAMES-developers specifically)
    Artists
    Animators
    Sound guys
    Games designers
other (and let us know what please!)

An idea of skill-levels would help too. Looking forward to this, and to meeting all of you this weekend!

For those attending the collaboration tomorrow. When you arrive at DigiPen you can park in any of Digipen's parking spaces EXCEPT the reserved spaces. Go through the front doors and register with security. Follow the signs to the Gibran room. Bring your computer and a power strip. Either bring your own food and drink or be prepared to buy it at the surrounding restaurants.

That's it. I am looking forward to meeting you tomorrow

Oh man, I really want to attend but I'll be working.

I need money to pay bills, but need events like this to learn more about game development and network. :(

Any suggestions for people in my situation?

    March 10, 2013

I actually just got the job and am in the 8 week training phase, so no time off has been accrued yet. I mean, I'm happy I've got a job, it just sucks that the retail hours block me from meeting up with you guys.

Maybe I'll get lucky and happen to get a Saturday off to coordinate in the future.

We have some organization starting here in the background between Diane and I. For those who are attending if I could get a quick shout out on your preferred engine this can save us on time and help planning along, Saturday is coming soon!

There is no wrong answer and this isn't a majority rules situation either, just merely gauging responses. Examples are UDK, Unity, Flash, Source or any other feel free to name.

Please, a quick response with your Engine of Choice, and perhaps a secondary if you wish.

    I'll start:

    1. Unity
    2. Flash

Is everyone supposed to be working on the same project, or their own projects? If it's the former, it sounds like an organizational nightmare. :-) I think by the time you guys figure out how to divide the work up among 35 people and piece it back together, the eight hours will be up. :-)

Do we need to bring our own computers/software or will there be systems available for us to use at the meetup?

I think you are right. I think that we will need to use this meeting to get organized, choose SKD, determine what we want to do and how we want to do it, brainstorm, etc. I will arrange for space for additional collaborations to follow through on what we do Saturday. --Diane

    Anyone with Flash/ActionScript 3 experience?

    March 11, 2013

  • Patrick R

...also porting assets to an engine isn't exactly easy sometimes and require multiple steps and often times 3rd party tools spread around the interwebs. Your looking at a lot of time spent downloading and installing SDK tools. So even artists will have to have to spend some time importing / exporting from their app of choice (pshop, maya, max, flash) and turning it around before it can even be viewed in a game engine.

So, preparation is key. Engine, game idea / type and even some concepts before saturday would be needed so you can hit the ground running and have an idea of whats going on.

    March 10, 2013

    • Richard H.

Agreed. I have a little unity experience, but not enough to warrant first-dibs calling. .. :p

      March 10, 2013

    • Shawn F.

I have Unity3D experience as well.

An engine should be picked ahead of time, no sense wasting time debating an absolute core issue like this.

I recommend something that has a "build a mod" function that can turn out a core mod quickly.

Anyone that is a coder with experience in these engines should have first say and speak up, and now, as familiarity with an engine can save everyone a huge amount of grief.

Also, everyone can download and have an sdk ready, and read up on some tutorials and watch some videos on youtube.

    Hello Everyone,
Because so many more people signed up for this since I arranged the space at City, we out grew that room. DigiPen has very graciously given us the use of a much larger room for a full day on Saturday, March 16. We will be meeting in the Gibran room. We need to cap attendance at 40.

This will be a BYOD event. The room at DigiPen has white boards, tables and wifi.
