Why be prepared? What dangers exist?

I've recently joined the group and have noticed a lack of getting together. So, as long as there aren't any objections, I would like to get this group kick started with a discussion on why we should be prepared. What hazards are around us, beyond our control, that have a potential of occurring in our lifetimes? This meeting will be to discuss what those hazards are, the chance that they will occur, and how they will affect our way of life. Be prepared to take notes! I encourage everyone to research the Cascadia Fault Line, what a "subduction zone" is, The 2001 Nisqually earthquake, the 2011 Japan earthquake and resulting tsunami, watch the movie "Battle in Seattle", research forest overgrowth risks and check out www.nwccweb.us (firemap). Please feel encouraged to bring any other information you feel would be useful for the discussion! I look forward to seeing you there!

There should be some way to update the "Attended" list so others, that skim through the past events, know what the attendance for upcoming events could be like.

Well parking was a bit pricey, but the Panama Hotel itself was nice & a great place to meet, the selection of tea was fantastic - just a shame only two people turned up!!

I created a meet and greet event in the Eastside Preppers group. If anyone is interested, please RSVP. Time, date, location TBA. First I need to see how many people are interested.

Surprisingly kind of free this weekend (Sunday evening). Starting the day off by helping a friend zero some rifles. Then going to the Puyallup gun show. So if anyone is going that day, could introduce myself during the event.

so how many people are willing to meet? I am thinking a get to know you session. What are you looking to learn, what prepping have you done and wish to do, would be a good start.

It sounds good, but parking can be difficult around there especially at those times. So make plans.

True. There's meter parking across the street and a small parking lot just up the hill. No idea on prices though.

Maybe we could do two sessions? Like December 1st and 3rd around 6:30 or something. That way we have a weekend and a weekday date, and people can attend one or both. No harm in discussing these things twice. As for where to meet, the Panama Hotel in Chinatown is a nice tea shop with a big table on the lower floor. I tried to get info about reserving it but no one has replied. I haven't been in awhile but all the times I have been, the table has been open.

They have a cool window in the floor that shows some of the belongings left behind by Japanese families that were going to be sent to internment camps. (http://www.panamahotelseattle.com/article2.htm)

All in all, its just a nice place, and I think would suit our needs fine for an initial meetup.

I am part of a very active group out in the South Puget Sound...that has quite a few meetups in the Federal Way area. I think that one of the biggest issues in any prepper group is willingness to travel. Everyone appears to want close to home and a convenient time. Reality is that if anything happens it may be too close to home requiring you to leave or at an inconvenient time. We rotate meetups from one end to the other so that at some point the meetup is close to everyone. As for the time when they can be held is it solely based on the event organizer. Just something to consider. I have joined several groups and none that I have seen are as active as the South Puget Sound Preppers. Just something to consider.

This event is scheduled for Ballard with a venue and several commitments from government agencies and vendors. I have no proplem traveling to the South SOund, but it would be difficult to move this event. The only thing I can say is sorry for the inconvenience on this one. This is a community event and the goal is to hold similar events around Seattle and the region. This was just a suggestion.

      November 22, 2012

  • Erika

This event appears to be old and a lot of the people who RSVP'd have not logged on in months. If anyone is truly interested in meeting up, it would be better for us to start our own event.

I am nolding an event at Loyal Heights Elementary School on January 26th from 12pm to 6pm. It is called Zombie Apocalypse Day. (Please find the page on facebook). The goal is for the kids to dress up as zombies as we hold a serious conversation about surviving a crisis and sustaining life afterwards. Included are the Red Cross, Seattle office of Emergency Management along with experts in urban farming, solar power, martial arts, dried food storage and many others. What I need are skilled survivalists who can drill down into important urban survival tactics.
I suggest the group meets at this event. It will be a great opportunity to ask questions of our government agencies as well as network with other suvivalists.
Please email me or talk through the facebook page. I look forward to being a part of this group and working with all of you.

There are 138 group members. If someone wants to organize, they just need to pick a date and they get who they get. Weeknights seems to be a popular request in the comments.

As to why prep? Take the CERT class thorough Everett FD. Earthquake, windstorm, snow/ice storm, down powerline, volcano, flooding, vehicle hazmat, war/terrorist/nuke, industrial hazmat, shooter/crime, and civil disorder are all things to prep for in this area. So Water, food, arms, temporary shelter, ability to seal the home for hazmat, non-powered entertainment, off grid cooking and heating, solar power, first aid are just the start of getting prepped. Having a network of friends and family that have your back is also a must.

I would like to attend. I am interested in meeting other preppers. Mon through Wed, anytime would work best for me. If this has to be on a weekend, I am available in the evening.

    I vote for the 8th :)

    November 9, 2012

8th is already booked out for me (and serendipitous its a whole day "Light Search & Rescue" training run by the city - not Xmas shopping, honest!). I'd have to go for the 1st, but like Mark I'm more generally available during weeknights (Mon & Wed-Fri).

In the meantime get your fix by watching The Best Defense tonight. It airs again at 10:00pm and 12:30am. They quickly go over home medical preparedness and emerging diseases.

My vote is for a weekday/evening (Mon-Thurs) as they work best for me. But it's fine if the majority rules for a weekend meeting as I have been able attend a couple recent meetings with another group. Until an Admin picks a date for this specific topic, I suggest someone just pick a restaurant or coffee shop to meet at so we can go over anything prepper related. I don't know about others, but I would just like to meet the group.

    October 31, 2012

  • Michelle R.

I'd be interested, if we can bring this post back to life :) I'm only free every other weekend though since I work weekdays and don't involve my kiddo in this kind of planning.

I really think mark has a point here , my first day and i see no one has posted anything on here yet, we need to meet often and learn from one and other. not all will be able to come but its a start
