Seattle RailsBridge Rails for Women Workshop

Note: This is a TWO DAY event!

Friday, June 7th, 6:30-9pm (REQUIRED): Software Installation Fest
Saturday, June 8th, 9:30am-4pm: Rails Workshop

4:30pm: Workshop Afterparty

This workshop is intended to reach out to women who are new to Ruby and Rails. Men are welcome to come - please find the woman in your life that wants to learn Ruby and Rails who will register and bring you as a guest.

The workshop is  FREE of charge!

We are still looking for teachers, TAs, and logistics help:

The workshop will be held at:

Substantial

900 E Pine, Suite 202 , Seattle, WA

In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete web application using Ruby on Rails. By the end of the workshop, you'll have an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.

We'll meet up Install Fest day to install all of the software you need, and then spend workshop day learning and writing code. Be sure to attend the installfest to make sure your laptop is ready for the workshop!

Total programming novices, system administrators, and developers in other languages are welcome to attend. We'll have different classes separated by experience level. Each participant needs to bring his or her own computer.

When you RSVP you'll be asked a few question about your operating system, level and type of programming experience, and whether you will be bringing any children. We will plan for a playgroup on site if you're bringing a child.

Pizza dinner will be provided Friday evening and lunch will be provided on Saturday.

If you have questions, please send a message to the organizers.

Thanks to all that helped make the workshop happen! I love learning in a collaborative environment -- hearing the questions that others have and learning from the discussions and answers is so valuable! I loved hearing the history and learning about groups that are out there for us. I'm excited to keep building on what I started there.
And of course I loved meeting and talking everyone during and after the workshop.

Thanks for all the hard work that went into this! It's truly appreciated!

Dude of course! So hope you've been brushing up on Ruby. I've got the most AMAZING project in Ruby to start writing. P.S. total beginner so you might regret me +1ing you. :-)

    • Dylan G.

To stay up on my Ruby, I've been watching some good tutorials on youtube from a Spokane CC teacher named Dave Jones. It's basically his entire class on Rails. Nothing beats hands on though. Haha, I refuse to regret anything!

Crystal ball time... I am waited listed 4th or so, assuming list goes in order. I am wondering about the odds of getting in? I might go ahead and do some work on installing Ruby (etc.) this week anyway, as I have the time!

    June 2, 2013

    • Laura

Thank-you Cheri. I will take a stab at it [guide & install] today!

      June 4, 2013

    • Laura

"Woot" - I just got into the workshop. So crystal ball not needed anymore. I will see attendees Friday!

Unfortunately, the wedding planned for Sat evening is now planned for Sat day time, so I'll have to wait till next time!

    June 6, 2013

  • Lauren W.

I will not be able to attend tomorrow, Friday. But will be able to attend all day Saturday. If I follow the install instructions <http://installfest.railsbridge.org/installfest/>;, I should be good to only attend on Saturday? Or is Friday an all or none must?

    June 6, 2013

  • Belinda

Sorry, something came up, and I won't be able to attend.

Annika, I think that's probably all we need to do. Should we meet up a little before the event? I already completed the ruby track on codecadamy :) thanks again for adding me.

I plan on TAing, which is a separate invite.

    May 15, 2013

Will there be a separate signup "event" for volunteers? (I still have some empty USB drives from last time).

I am so sorry I won't be able to make it to this. It is one of my busiest and happiest weekends every year. I can't wait until the next one! I'll spread around the news though, since I know a couple other ladies that may be interested. Thank you again for holding these!
