Taxonomy for App Makers

Users of all kinds increasingly access online data through mobile devices, both in native applications and on responsive websites. As a profession, we’ve eagerly embraced the changes that mobile contexts bring to interaction design. Our approach to higher-level organization, however, is still deeply influenced by the habits we learned from designing for the fixed-width web.

This talk, first delivered at the 2013 Information Architecture Summit in Baltimore, explores the changing role of taxonomy work in the world of mobile application design and development. We will discuss the types of taxonomies used in traditional web work and see how a careful re-envisioning of these tools can lead to a stronger and more flexible mobile-aware development cycle. We will also see how using tailored taxonomy work can be used to create cohesion and consistency across an entire information ecosystem.

    The talk was at the perfect level. Not too basic, not too much into the weeds at a high level either. More like this!! :D

    I totally missed the first part of the talk because I was expecting it to start at 7pm (it must have started at 6:30?), I got there at 6:50 or so, only a few seats left (maybe 5 in the corner?) at that time but there were seats and I could see just fine from them.

    The speaker took like a half-a-second to "ask" if anyone wanted to take a break for pizza and drinks but didn't really do so and just jumped right in to part two. I think we should always have a break as not everyone is going to want to be "that person" who raises their hand to ask for the break.

    I did eventually get some food after the talk once the next round of 3 pizzas arrived (I love that you guys do that!). I felt I missed the opportunity to do some networking prior to the talk. Where there "who's hiring?" announcements at the beginning, I guess I missed my op to do that (totally my fault there).

    It was very interesting! Two things I wished was I hope there were remaining seats. I was late and I know there should be 80 seats so I was not sure why there was no seats left. One more thing was that it would have been nicer if more people left to talk to each other. Thank you for organizing this meetup.
