WP Developer Mini-Hack -- Contribute to Jetpack

If you're a WordPress developer, come join us for a few hours of hacking fun. This is your chance to work on some interesting plugins with the developers who write and maintain them -- or bring your own plugin project to share and hack on. All that's needed is a WordPress development environment and an interest in plugin development.

At this meetup you're free to spend time working on any plugin you want, but we'll have several plugin devs on-hand to help get you on board and contributing to their projects. For example, the esteemed Ben Lobaugh will be around to help you contribute to Automattic's Jetpack plugin (http://jetpack.me/). We'll have more pre-fab opportunities too -- or bring your own plugin and recruit some devs to help you with it (if you are brining a project to share, it will help if it's already versioned on github for quick collaboration.)

So -- join us! Drink coffee! Write some code! Meet some new people! Get involved in a new project! (What's the worst thing that could happen?)

Thanks for the warm welcome today! I enjoyed looking over Matt's shoulder, learning about GitHub with Lee and talking with George and Ben. Gotta get set up so I can start contributing. 'Til next time!

Won't be able to make it, folks. We have a sick cat that we're taking to the vet this morning. Hope to see you at the Docs Sprint next weekend. Cheers!

Ben & George, are there a particular set of issues or areas you'd like us to concentrate on? I'd like to devote some time to reading and thinking about the issues beforehand. For example bug > enhancements?

    Assuming we are working from:

Sorry Ben but looks like I have/had the flu, so even though I am feeling better I don't think I should attend in person. However I am hopeful I can attend virtually. I'll be happy to be assigned an issue and be in irc #wpseattle to chat.

    • Matt P.

Oh noes!!! Why don't we all pile into #wpseattle on freenode ... Nate we can huddle there. How bad is the flu? Hopefully not too bad ...

I wrote a feedback exporter plugin for Jetpack a few years ago for a site I was managing. It should still work but maybe it could use a facelift as it is pretty barebones. Basically the plugin takes any Jetpack form and exports its contents to a csv file.

Looks like you guys have already made an exporter and integrated it into the bottom of the 'Feedback' page.

Is this a good event for someone new to WordPress? I have development experience, but WP (and php) is fairly new to me. I'm interested in learning more about the intricacies of WordPress customization and wondering if this is the right event for that.

Cool. Jacqueline -- the main meetup is for absolutely anyone and everyone. There's a breakout group for developers there that is appropriate for all.

Matt: Perfect. I think I'll try to hit one of those before I attempt a dev-centric meetup.

Here's a good one that just happened to me. Why does JetPack need to be reconnected all the time?

Ben/George, awhile back Mark and I were talking about progressively-enhancing the module activation/deactivation screen with AJAX calls, so that you didn't have to refresh the page and wait when changing several modules.

Do you think that'd be a good thing to work on? I'm also interested in helping iron out the remaining issues with the Multisite branch :)

    January 21, 2014

    • George S.

I've actually got a branch going with something very similar that I'd love to go over with you in person. You can take a look on GitHub -- I think the branch is new-admin-ui -- it runs them all through Backbone for instant filtering and the like. I'd played with ajax activation/deactivation before, but we'd need to add some custom stuff to handle when a module's activation/deactivation adds or removes a menu.

Guess what everyone??? We have the honor of the lead developer, the big cheese himself, George Stephanis, Team Lead of Jetpack joining us!

    3 · January 20, 2014

    • Matt P.

Hey this is great. Since George will be there I think we should default to working on jetpack in particular unless anyone else has a burning desire...

      January 20, 2014

  • Brendan G.

Very cool, would love to contribute to JetPack in particular.

Hey Brendan, remember me from BU the old IS&T student employee, I used to work under Mike Burns and Chris before him.

I didn't know you moved out here! I guess it would make sense that I would find you in a WP meetup haha.

      January 16, 2014

    • Brendan G.

Hey Tyler, of course I remember you! We'll have to catch up on Saturday.

Would it be ok to look over someone's shoulder?
