We are a group of moms and kids in Seattle, and the Eastside (i.e., anything east of Lake Washington, like Mercer Island, Redmond, Bellevue, New Castle, Issaquah and Sammamish) and surrounding areas. We do mostly outdoor activities and some indoor activities.
We started as a playgroup in West Seattle but have transitioned to an outdoor and nature group encompassing a wider region. Our purpose is to connect with nature and each other.
Examples of some of our activities involve year-round hiking, camping, winter sports, biking, festivals, pumpkin patches, Easter egg hunts, berry picking, pools, beaches, parks, playgrounds and music events. We try to have at least one activity per month. It's a group to engage and make connections for kids and parents.
All members are invited to host an event, which is a great way to meet others. Just click on "schedule a new meetup" to post an event. [Please see our "safety tips" section. Always meetup in public places where there will be other people around, or where there will be someone you already know. For hikes, always meetup at parking lots where there are other people around and go only if you see and feel comfortable with the mom(s) and kid(s).]
Our active members currently make up an extremely small group of moms (less than a dozen), but we always look forward to making new connections! The group is a way to keep that possibility open for any who are interested. Our activities can involve the entire family, though we have kept the name of our group formally a "moms and kids" group since we'd like to meet the moms first. The children of our moms who are active in the group range in age from babies to 5 years old (with most being 4-5 years old), and so our hikes, for example, tend to be slow and short. Our group however welcomes families with older children too, and some activities are suitable for any age group, like camping.
Upon requesting to join, you must upload a photo of yourself in order for your membership request to be approved (because this helps with safety and with recognizing each other at meetups).
A new member and child are required to meet at one of our events with a member of our leadership team preferably within a year of joining, so we can see that you really are a mom and child; otherwise membership will be removed for safety reasons. Membership will also be removed for inactivity for a long time (e.g. well over a year) unless the member communicates a desire to remain on board.
Our membership is free. Donations (via the 'chip in' button) are accepted to help us pay for our meetup.com website, but donations are not necessary. Sometimes there are fees, like for campsites, for which we'd ask those attending the event to chip in their share.
Please RSVP "yes" to an event only if you will actually go, and change it to "no" if you won't since a host will actually be looking for you, perhaps waiting around or bringing supplies for you. If you want confirmation that the host or attendees are still going, you can post a comment or send a message.
Please remember that you are solely responsible for yourself and your child in all aspects during our activities. We are a group that just meets up to do things together. Please don't assume that the leader(s) or host(s) of an event has any special skills or knowledge or is responsible for anyone in any activity. Also, please remember to keep an eye out for your child at all times, as parents can be easily distracted while enjoying ourselves.
