River Walk to the George Washington Birthday Parade in Old Town

Alexandria is hosting a full month of events to celebrate George Washington's 282nd birthday, but the city's annual parade is the centerpiece.  I've never seen this parade, so it seems like a good year to check it out.  A good parade in Old Town is always a fun place to be.

Meetup and River Walk

We'll meet at Indigo Landing where there's plenty of free parking, restrooms, a cafe, and terrific views of the Washington skyline.  The Washington Sailing Marina is there, and the entrance is clearly marked with signs from both directions on the George Washington Parkway.

From Indigo Landing, we can enjoy a nice walk along the Mt. Vernon trail to King Street in Old Town.  The trail parallels the Potomac River, and offers many scenic views as it passes Oronoco Bay Park and Founders Park on Union Street.  The walking distance is 2.2 miles each way which takes less than an hour.  Our total roundtrip walk will be about 5-6 miles.

Gather at O'Connell's Bar Before the Parade

Daniel O'Connell's Bar at 112 King Street is a popular Irish pub that's well-rated on Yelp.  It's conveniently located near the parade route, so it's a perfect place for us to gather in Old Town.

We should arrive there around 12:00 noon for a toast to George Washington, America's Foremost Founding Father!

Full information, menu, and reviews of O'Connell's are here:

The Parade

Alexandria's George Washington Birthday Parade starts a 1:00 pm and goes until 3:00 pm according to the website.  It's the usual collection of marchers, bands, and local celebrities, although George and Martha Washington apparently make an appearance.  We'll find a good place to watch on the parade route when we get there.

Full information about the George Washington Birthday Parade below:

Following the parade, we can wander around Old Town to see what's happening and have some refreshments and food.  Then it's another two-mile walk back to Indigo Landing.

Meetup Details

As this is an outdoor event, we'll need good walking weather.  I'll post a notice here and send out an email by 9:00 am on Monday morning if we need to change plans or cancel the event.  Call Jake at[masked] with any questions or to find us.

I hope to see you there!

A great day with excellent sunny and clear weather. Cold, but there was no wind and we had a pleasant scenic walk to Old Town. We got refreshed with food and drink at O'Connells pub and then watched the parade nearby on the street. Good fun in the sun watching lots of interesting folks come by. Afterward, we went to the Irish place that Gloria recommended, and it was perfect. Good beers and we were able to sit outside in the sun on the patio. What a nice way to spend a February afternoon! Happy Birthday, George!

THANK YOU JAKE for hosting a COOL meetup in Old Town. The walk was PERFECT! We didn't have the hassles of parking and we could eat & drink & walk it off! I had a great time meeting some cool new folks. And of course hanging out with my old (I mean that in the good way) SHR buds was THE BEST!
