What could be better than a relaxing afternoon bike ride along pretty shaded lanes lined with beautiful houses facing the Chesapeake Bay? How about flat paved roads and very little traffic the whole way? Well, Rev. Jake's got ya covered on this ride...
This is a new bike ride idea I got from exploring neighborhoods and looking at houses in Annapolis. While driving around, I discovered a lovely community named Bay Ridge located right on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. These photos were taken in February, so you can just imagine how nice the greenery and views will be when April arrives...
The Bay Ridge neighborhood is located on a scenic peninsula filled with impressive homes and a network of wooded avenues that all lead to gorgeous water vistas of the Bay. The entire area is simply a beautiful place for biking, and it's just a short drive from Eastport and downtown Annapolis.
Directions and Parking
Don't trust your GPS for the best directions! From the I-495 Beltway, take Rt. 50 East to Exit 22 onto Artis T. Allen Blvd (Rt 665). As you exit, keep going straight past the signs for Riva Rd. and Rt. 2 (Solomons Island Rd). Going straight will keep you on the main road which changes its name after the traffic light to Forest Dr. Keep going straight several miles on Forest Dr. as it becomes Bay Ridge Rd. after passing Quiet Waters Park.
Continue on Bay Ridge Rd. until you pass the traffic light for Arundel on the Bay Rd. and the Bru-Mar Garden Center. The public parking area where we'll meet is on Bay Ridge Rd. at Peninsula Park about 100 yds. beyond the intersection. See the link below and the Google Meetup map above:
Biking Through Bay Ridge
From our meetup point at the public lot at Peninsula Park, we'll head right on Bay Ridge Rd. using the dedicated bike lane. Bay Ridge is a 2-lane road with marked bike lanes on both sides. It's not very busy since the road leads to the end of the peninsula.
After a mile or so, we'll enter the Bay Ridge community and its lovely streets. Our ride will then head towards the shoreline avenues of Bay Drive and River Drive which follow the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. We'll explore Lake Drive and the interior avenues of the Bay Ridge community to get some quality biking miles through this beautiful area.
During our ride, we'll get excellent views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the Annapolis skyline with the State House, beaches and boats, and wide expanses of the Bay itself. The roads are generally flat and there's almost no traffic since it's a peninsula known mostly to residents.
The total ride distance will be approximately 18 miles, depending on how many side streets we take. It's suitable for all bikes and riders.
No, Rev. Jake can't afford to live in Bay Ridge, but I do know a top quality destination when I see one. And I also know it's FREE to ride through this scenic neighborhood even if I don't live there. We've done that many times enjoying the fine neighborhoods at Mason Neck, and this time we'll do it at Bay Ridge in Annapolis.
Post-Ride Socializing in Eastport
Eastport is one of our favorite areas to eat, drink, and have a good time in Annapolis. We can easily hit Davis' Pub or the Boatyard Bar & Grill after we end our Bay Ridge bike ride. Great pub grub at both places, and outdoor seating too! Check them out below:
As this is an outdoor event, we'll need good biking weather to make it a success. Check here on Saturday morning. I'll post an update and send out an email by 10:00 am if we need to change plans or cancel. Call Jake at[masked] with questions or to find us.
I hope to see you there!
