Kayaking at Fountainhead & Pub Grub in Clifton

This will be a fun afternoon paddling on the Occoquan Reservoir, followed by friendly socializing over good eats and drinks at the Main Street Pub in Clifton.

Autumn is a beautiful season to be on the water kayaking, and September is usually ideal since the weather is still warm and the trees display most of their summer foliage.

Kayaking at Fountainhead Park

The Occoquan Reservoir is perfect for experiencing nature while enjoying peaceful paddling conditions in a convenient location.  It's basically a large lake with abundant wildlife fed by Bull Run and the Occoquan River.  The reservoir is about 12 miles long, and is ringed by forested woodlands, rock formations, and nice homes nestled in the trees.  Big power boats are prohibited, so the reservoir is always fairly calm for paddling a kayak.

We'll meet at the boat launch area by the reservoir. You can find us easily by looking for Jake's bright yellow Necky kayak and neon white hair.  ;-)

Fountainhead Park in Fairfax has a nice launch ramp for kayaks, canoes, and small boats.  It's located next to the main park building where kayaks and canoes can be rented on a first-come basis for approximately $10 per hour or $41 per day.

THERE ARE NO ADVANCE RENTAL RESERVATIONS.  You'll need to get there early to see what's available if you want to rent a boat.  Fountainhead has a about dozen single kayaks to rent, as well as a few tandems.

You are also welcome to bring your own kayak and just pay a $5 launch fee at the park office when you arrive.  Complete information can be found on the Fountainhead Park website:

http://www.nvrpa.org/park/fountainhead/cont...

We'll paddle at a relaxed pace for approximately three hours, and travel 6-8 miles.  This is a good event for newer paddlers to practice their skills.  We can give some basic kayaking tips for those who want it.

If you do tip over, DON'T PANIC. Just hang onto your boat and paddle until we can rescue you. You'll need to be able to climb back into the boat again. Pick a paddle buddy to stay with you, keep a few people close in sight, and watch for anyone who needs assistance. Everything will work out fine if people are alert and stay together as part of the group.

All Participants Are Responsible for Their Own Personal Safety

Our group of recreational kayakers look out for each other, but we're not certified experts at rescuing novices.  Our paddle events have been very successful so far because we stick together in case anyone needs assistance.  So far, there hasn't been a problem.  Let's keep it that way!

The Main Street Pub in Clifton

Following the paddle, we'll drive about 10 miles along pretty wooded back roads to the Main Street Pub in Clifton.  It's a fun place to get some good food and drink in a relaxed casual setting, and it's easy to recognize because the pub inhabits an old gas station on Main St. under a cool vintage TEXACO sign.  The drive is itself is worth the effort, and the destination is even better.

The Main Street Pub is a combination restaurant/bar/grocery store that features excellent burgers, beers, fish and chips, sandwiches and a variety of other tasty dishes.  Prices are reasonable, and there's a nice outside seating area to soak up the ambience of Clifton's scenic Main St. and the passing parade of visitors.

Restaurant Strategy

Our group's standard procedure in restaurants is to infiltrate them as individual customers so we get faster service and separate checks.  Then we can mix and mingle without the hassles of finding large group seating and getting an automatic tip added to a single gigantic bill.  Figuring out who owes what and paying each share at the end of the event is an unpleasant chore that detracts from having fun at our group meetups.

So just sit down and order what you want when you enter.  Don't worry about trying to find room for all of us at once.  Everybody will get in and have a good time.  We always do...

Meetup Details

We'll need good kayaking weather for this event. I'll send out an email and post a notice here by 9:00 am on Saturday morning if it needs to be changed or canceled due to weather. A little rain is okay and can add to the adventure, but we won't paddle in high winds, lightning, excessive heat, or dangerous weather conditions.  Call Jake at[masked] with any questions.

I hope to see you there!

First time in my inflatable, a little slow, but good kayak. First time on the Occoquan, even though I live just down the road. The group,as usual was fun and great company. Thanks Jake for another great adventure!

A SPECTACULAR day all around! All the wildlife came out to play along with us...an eagle, turtles, deer, seagulls :) and a Heron who Jim (aka Heron Whisperer) got within 2 ft! On the water was the perfect mix of paddling to Jakes party music (nice paddle twirl technique boys) to chillaxin in a cove. It was all good! Enjoying Historic Clifton's scenic charm on an outdoor patio with everyone was the perfect end to the day! THANK YOU JAKE!

Perfect day for a paddle: started off with a Bald Eagle swooping in to pick off a fish, herons everywhere, and deer! Kayaking jam session on return paddle was awesome! Great group, great food and our first "Sloppe Bobbe"--- and it was GOOOOOD! ;)
    THANK YOU JAKE!

Who was wondering about Ukrainian festival? it is Silver Spring on September 14-15. Shouldn't we ask Jake to investigate the case and make an cultural event?

The crack o'noon arrives early when you cross the Potomac. Yet a worthwile journey. The drawbridge was down, car traffic light, and it's beautiful in Virginia. Outstanding park facilities, real pretty lake, and FUN company. Let's go back! Thanks Jake, a well planned FUN outing.

No way to know for sure. People come and go on rentals. It worked out okay last year.

I need to rent a kayak and I am looking to carpool with someone who has room on their roof rack. I'd be happy to pitch in for gas.
