Bike Through Old Town Across the Wilson Bridge to National Harbor for Lunch

Let's go for a fun and relaxing bike ride on the Mt. Vernon trail from the Washington Sailing Marina at Indigo Landing over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to National Harbor.

At National Harbor, we can check out what's happening, grab a drink at McLoone's by the plaza, and have lunch at Elevation Burger.

This is an easy bike ride suitable for all riders and all types of bikes.  It's a scenic 13-mile round trip on the mostly flat paved bike trail that runs from Indigo Landing through Old Town Alexandria along the parks and waterfront of Union St. to Jones Point Park.  The trail then goes over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge using a new bike lane that's safely separated from traffic.  Riding on the protected bike path is a cool experience with great views of Washington, Old Town Alexandria, and the Potomac River.

McLoone's Pier House at National Harbor is a chain restaurant/bar with a view of the Potomac, which makes it a good place to stop and refresh ourselves.  Elevation Burger is a popular and affordable restaurant nearby that prepares each order individually when you order at the counter.  It features fresh natural ingredients, and has inside seating and outdoor tables if the weather is nice. Their burgers (grass-fed beef or veggie), fries cooked in olive oil, and hand-made shakes are a real treat.  Very tasty!  Check out the menu here:

At National Harbor, we can also see the Christmas decorations at the Gaylord National Hotel.  Each year, they do elaborate indoor and outdoor displays that are impressive and fun to see.  Saturday will be the first day of their Christmas display season, so it's a good chance to have a look.  Unfortunately, the really great stuff like indoor snowfalls and light shows don't occur until after 6:00 pm, but Santa will be accepting visitors during the day for those of you who need to give him your wish list.  ;-)

We'll head back across the bridge before dark to our starting point at Indigo Landing using the same route. When our ride is done, we can hang out and enjoy some refreshing beverages at Indigo Landing which has a nice picnic area and lawn with a beautiful view of Washington across the Potomac River.

Bring your own refreshments and a folding chair.  If it's still open, you can purchase burgers, dogs, and other food and drinks at the Afterdeck Cafe which has a lovely outdoor deck facing National Airport and DC skyline.  They sell Sam Adams beer for only $3.50 per large cup.  We always enjoy fun socializing outdoors at our SHR events, and fall weather is usually a nice time to do that.  After all, having FUN is the official purpose of this group.

National Harbor does not permit bike riding in the central plaza area, so we'll leave our bikes at the rack area where we enter.  Bring a lock!

Helmets are required for ALL riders!

The Washington Sailing Marina and Indigo Landing are easily accessible from the George Washington Parkway going in either direction.  There are clear signs telling you where to turn from the parkway.

This is an outdoor event that depends upon good biking weather to be successful.  If we need to change plans or cancel, I'll post an update notice here before 9:00 am on Saturday morning.  Call Jake at[masked] with any questions.

I hope to see you there!

Beautiful biking weather on a bright sunny day with autumn colors still on the trees. We had a great fun group who wanted to enjoy the day. And we did... We had a nice ride through Alexandra's waterfront to Jones Point Park, and then we went over the Wilson Bridge. Our drinks at McLoones Pub went very well. Folks then went their own way to Elevation Burger (great fries) and beyond. We gathered once again at the bike rack and rode home. Those of us who stayed at Indigo Landing to enjoy the sunset and some wine got a nice view of the DC lights. It was a great day overall. Thanks to everyone who came for making it a wonderful day!
