Hi Secular Hikers,
Weather permitting; there will be a hike on Sunday, June 16th on Spruce Mountain. This is a relatively easy 5 1/2 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of a few hundred feet. A portion the hike to the top of Spruce Mountain is of moderate steepness, but almost everyone should be able to do this hike. There is more information about this hike at http://www.douglas.co.us/dcoutdoors/trails/open-space-trails/spruce-mountain-trail/. Unfortunately, the address given for the trailhead is not correct and I do not have an address.
There is also additional information about this hike including a map and basic driving directions at http://www.douglas.co.us/openspace/spruce-mountain/. However, there is no legal access to Spruce Mountain from South Perry Park Road/Highway 105, even though the Douglas County map shows the property extending to that road.
To get to the trailhead, head north on Interstate 25, take exit 163 to County Line Road, turn left, go west 2.6 miles, turn right onto Spruce Mountain Road immediately after you cross the railroad tracks. (The intersection can be challenging at times, so be careful and enter the intersection slowly.) Drive about 3 miles northeast on Spruce Mountain Road. The trailhead parking lot is located on the left or west side of Spruce Mountain Road. It is clearly marked with a large sign. This is the official trailhead parking lot. Unfortunately, the parking lot is not extremely large. You may want to carpool from a different location, such as the Safeway in Monument. From Safeway, continue Northwest on 105, after 3.6 miles, continue onto Spruce Mountain Road (do not turn left onto 105 going north), drive 3 miles to the trailhead as described above. If you want to carpool, you need to organize this among yourselves.
The hike will start at 9:00 AM.
Georgianne and I will not be able to attend this hike. It will be lead by Susanne Sener and her dog Finn, phone number: 337-1178.
Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.
Please let Susanne know if you plan on attending the hike. If you change your mind, please let her know that also.
