Hike Greenland Open Space Loop

Hi Secular Hikers,

Weather permitting; the hike on Sunday, July 7th will be the Greenland Open Space Loop. Part of this hike is actually also the Santa Fe Trail north of Palmer Lake. It is a relatively easy just over 8 mile hike.   There is more information about this hike at http://www.douglas.co.us/dcoutdoors/trails/open-space-trails/greenland-open-space-trail.  Unfortunately, the address given for the trailhead is not correct and I do not have an address.  The directions to the trailhead are:  From Colorado Springs, take Interstate 25 north to Exit 167, go west .3 miles and turn south on Noe Road, go south .5 miles to Greenland Open Space trailhead.

You may want to carpool from a different location, such as the Woodmen Valley Park-n-Ride.  If you want to carpool, you need to organize this among yourselves.

The hike will start at 9:00 AM.

Georgianne and I will not be able to attend this hike. It will be lead by Susanne Sener and her dog Finn, phone number: 337-1178.

Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.

Please let Susanne know if you plan on attending the hike. If you change your mind, please let her know that also.

The tentative hiking schedule from July 21st through September is:

Sunday, July 21st, Green Settlement and Greenwood Park Extreme Adventure Hike

Sunday, August 18th, Almagre Mountain

Sunday, September 1st, Chautauqua Trail 715 to the top on Mount Herman

Saturday, September 7th, Tenney Crags

Sunday, September 15th, Pancake Rocks

I tried my best to match the desires of the group in determining the hiking schedule.

The weather was great, balmy and overcast! Warm but not hot. Thanks to Jesse and Gene for attending. We completed the loop in 3 hours, including a short stop at Greenmont Cemetery. I'll post photos tomorrow.

Four of us, including the chihuaha, did the loop in three hours, stopping only to check out a couple of tombstones near the trail. The surface is mostly packed dirt, and the grade is probably three percent or less, so I could have left the hiking poles in the car.

The weather was dry and warm, with a temperature approaching eighty degrees, very little breeze and an overcast sky.

While standing near a tombstone for the Daltons, a buck passed within fifteen to twenty yards of me. He did not see me and was in no big hurry as he trotted through. It was pretty cool to see a buck with a full set of antlers up close. For those of you interested in such things, I found a walking calorie burn calculator website, located here: http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/walking-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx. You plug in your weight, the walking distance, the approximate grade and walking time, then the site returns the number of calories you burned.

Meet at the picnic benches. If you enjoy local history, there's some good information posted, along with a map.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
