Hi Secular Hikers,

Weather permitting; there will be a hike on Sunday, September
1st on Chautauqua Trail 715 maybe to the top on Mount Herman. The trail starts on the southwest edge of the town of Palmer Lake and heads towards Mount Herman. There are a couple short sections where the trail that is rather steep.  Then after that, the trail is far more flat for a few miles.  For those people who want to only go part way up this beautiful valley, I will give directions how to get back to the parking lot and how to drive back out.  Overall the trail has a relatively gradual incline and I would rate the trail easy to intermediate in difficulty (except for the two short relatively steep sections at the beginning).

For those people who want to go all the way to the top of
Mount Herman, I would rate this trail as intermediate to difficult (round trip of 10 to 12 miles, about 1500 to 2000 ft. elevation gain).

We would be leaving from my house (see directions below) at
9:00 AM and carpooling to the trailhead.

Please bring enough water and snacks on the hike.

Please let me know if you plan on attending the hike. If you
change your mind, please let me know that also.

Directions:

Travel north from Colorado Springs on Interstate 25 to exit 156A, North Gate Blvd. Take your first left (at the first traffic light and a double turn lane) onto Struthers Road. Follow Struthers Road for about 1 mile, there is a large "Summer Glen Estates" sign on your right. Directly in front of the sign, turn right onto Falcons Nest Loop. Take the second right onto Scottsdale Drive, then your first left onto Sedona Drive. My house is at the end of the cul-de-sac, slightly on the right. 205 Sedona Drive. 594-4506.

Special note for the people who live north of Gleneagle: let me know and I will arrange something else for you a few days before the hike.

For anyone interested in the Coors can that was found, it appears to be from late 1960 :)

The hike was difficult for some, but everyone seemed to enjoy the scenery.

It was much more difficult for me this time, than the last time we hiked to Mount Herman. My knees are killing me today. At least we weren't pelted by the folks firing paint balls.

Yet how often can one set out for a lovely hike through nature and find oneself in the midst of a paint ball war? At least the warring factions allowed us safe passage.

I had a great time on this hike, even the rain at the end was more refreshing than anything

How long do you think the hike will take?

      Hi Michela,

It is possible for anyone to turn around early on this hike and go back to your car. The lower part of the hike is a beautiful valley that is worth doing even if you do not go to the top of Mount Herman. I will be pointing out the back for people who return to their cars early.

715 has some water crossings that were high on 8/24...the last leg up to the jeep trail was washed out.

Still trying to figure out where the trail starts. I'm wondering if it's easier to meet everyone there.

Ugh! I have a soccer game that may be a probrem! I will make a hike one day!

I always allow at least 4 to 6 hours regardless, especially with carpooling, breaks, etc.

Definitely interested in Mt Herman--haven't been to the top in about 15 years.
