Exploring Mt. Kineo and north

Hi Secular Hikers,

Weather permitting; there will be a hike on Monday, July 21st.  This hike will be exploring the area north of Mt. Kineo (elevation 9478 ft.) near Jones Park.  The trailhead parking lot is about 7500 ft.  We will probably also be exploring Jones Park.

Some of us plan on going out to dinner after the hike and some of us will be carpooling from the Woodmen Valley park-n-ride. To get there from Interstate 25 and Woodmen Road, go west to the first stop light, turn left (south) on Corporate Drive, turn right (west) at the first intersection onto Mark Dabling Blvd, take an immediate right turn into the parking lot.  We will be leaving this parking lot at 8:15 AM.

Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.

Please let me know if you plan on attending the hike and where you will meet us. If you change your mind, please let me know that also.

p.s. It costs me $72 twice a year to be a meetup organizer.  Would you please consider helping by sharing this expense?  If I receive about $0.50 per person (including guests) per hike or (to avoid a bunch of quarters) $1.00 per person about every other hike you attend, I would come out roughly even.

Felt much longer than 11 miles due to the steep climbs, but the views were worth it from Mt Kineo. Seeing Loud's cabin and searching for helicopter debris gave us needed breaks. I was a little sore and tired at the end, but no hangover effects yesterday or today. Looking forward to the bottomless pit hike.

11 miles - HA! The climb up Kineo from Cpt Jacks was steep. The climb up to the saddle between Garfield and Arthur was grueling. I was a wreck by the time we reached the helicopter crash site. On the descent I noticed the lovely babbling stream. On the way up I did not even hear it over my labored breathing. Still in all - perfect day and beautiful sights.

We went up Buckhorn Trail to Cap’n Jacks. We started searching for the trail that went up Mt. Kineo taking two side steps before the correct trail. The second side step took us up a 200 ft. hill with a great view of the Tenney Crags and Mt. Kineo. From the top of Mt. Kineo we saw the hill we were on earlier as well as other great scenery. We hiked past Louds Cabin on our way to the saddle between Mt. Garfield and Mt. Arthur. Just past the saddle we searched for revenants of a long ago helicopter crash. We returned to the car via Seven Bridges Trail 622.

We hiked a total of around 10 to 11 miles with a total elevation gain of about 4000 ft. There were sections of the trails that were extremely steep so it felt much longer than 11 miles.

This hike sounds awesome. I love the Mt. Kineo area. Are you going to summit Garfield? That's on my todo list. Why do I have to work...? Have fun!
