Corporate Drive & Mark Dabling Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO
Hi Secular Hikers,
Weather permitting; there will be another hike to the bottomless pit on Monday, August 4th. The very large hillside of columbines should still be in full bloom. (Many hundreds or even thousands of columbines.) They were in full bloom July 28th. This is a second chance for those who did not get to attend that hike or did not make it all the way.
The hike starts at an elevation of a little over 6500 ft. Barr Camp is at 10,200 ft. Depending on how far we go up the bottomless pit the final elevation will be somewhere around 11,500 ft. It is about 6.5 miles to Barr Camp from the trailhead and another 1.2 miles to the turnoff to the bottomless pit. From there it is somewhere around 2 miles to the columbines in bottomless pit. Therefore, the entire elevation gain is around 5000 ft. with a total round trip of about 20 miles.
Some of us plan on going out to dinner after the hike and some of us will be carpooling from the Woodmen Valley park-n-ride. To get there from Interstate 25 and Woodmen Road, go west to the first stop light, turn left (south) on Corporate Drive, turn right (west) at the first intersection onto Mark Dabling Blvd, take an immediate right turn into the parking lot. We will be leaving this parking lot at 6:40 AM. For those who are carpooling from my house in Briargate, we will be leaving here at 6:30 AM.
There is a free shuttle bus that leaves every 20 minutes to head to the bus stop near Barr Trail. There is parking around Manitou Springs Memorial Park on El Paso Blvd. The bus stop is a little south of El Paso on Old Mans Trail. I plan on being on the 7:00 AM bus. Please note: the bus leaves exactly on the hour and every 20 and 40 minutes after the hour. The driver uses the clock on the bus which may not be the same as your clock.
The bus stop service ends at 8:08 PM. So if we are not back down to the bus stop by then, we will have to walk back to Memorial Park, an additional 1.2 mile walk.
Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.
Please let me know if you plan on attending the hike. If you change your mind, please let me know that also.
This hike is an extremely difficult and very long, all day hike open to hikers who are advanced level, experienced hikers that are very fit and fast hikers with a great deal of endurance.
p.s. It costs me $72 twice a year to be a meetup organizer. Would you please consider helping by sharing this expense? If I receive about $0.50 per person (including guests) per hike or (to avoid a bunch of quarters) $1.00 per person about every other hike you attend, I would come out roughly even.
