Hike Heizer Trail, Hurricane Canyon, Long Ranch Road Loop

Hi Secular Hikers,

Weather permitting; there will be a hike on Monday, August 25th.  This hike will be going up the Heizer trail to the top of Cascade Mountain then coming down to Hurricane Canyon.  From there we take trail 703 up to Bob’s Road then go down Long Ranch Road.  We then head back to our vehicles in Cascade.  It is somewhere around 10 to 15 miles round trip and somewhere around an elevation gain of 2500' and 3000' with all the ups and downs.  The top of Cascade Mountain is at an elevation of 9387'.

Some of us plan on going out to dinner after the hike and some of us will be carpooling from the Woodmen Valley park-n-ride. To get there from Interstate 25 and Woodmen Road, go west to the first stop light, turn left (south) on Corporate Drive, turn right (west) at the first intersection onto Mark Dabling Blvd, take an immediate right turn into the parking lot.  We will be leaving this parking lot at 8:15 AM.  For those people meeting at my house, we will be leaving at 8:00 AM.

For those people coming from the south part of town, meet me at the parking lot northwest of the intersection of Highway 24 and 21st Street. From Highway 24 and 21st Street, go north on 21st Street, take the first left turn onto Naegele Rd and then the first right turn into the parking lot. We will be leaving this parking lot at about 8:25 AM.

Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.

Please let me know if you plan on attending the hike and where you will meet us. If you change your mind, please let me know that also.

p.s. It costs me $72 twice a year to be a meetup organizer.  Would you please consider helping by sharing this expense?  If I receive about $0.50 per person (including guests) per hike or (to avoid a bunch of quarters) $1.00 per person about every other hike you attend, I would come out roughly even.

Everyone seemed to enjoyed this somewhat difficult hike.

I saw those photos of everyone posing with the suspended rock. You're a bunch of hams! :)

I hope you made it back into town before the line of thunderstorms developed and moved through. We got some hail at my place. That's only the second or third time this season.

Kym, were you able to collect GPS data for this hike?

I am ashamed to say that I still have not finished my manual. I hear that your watch is back and working. Here's hoping that your interview goes well tomorrow.

I am not sure who that last comment was meant for, but John and I will meet the group and follow you up to the TH.

Hmmm. Maybe reconsidering . . . is Long Ranch Road the trail that circles Mt Manitou and heads back down to Ute Pass Trail? Also where 703 crosses French Creek there is a trail that goes to the left. Does that run along the creek back to Cascade or dead-end?

We will circle Mt. Manitou on this hike. Long Ranch Road completes the circle. Yes there is a "trail" going down French Creek after we cross 703 that leads down to Long Ranch Road.

Rich, I was interviewed earlier today. The employer said I may be asked back for a second interview as soon as Monday afternoon, so I'm rescinding my RSVP for this hike.

Rich, I attended two job fairs in the last two days. At present, I have nothing scheduled in conflict with this hike. If my circumstances change, I will cancel my RSVP no later than on Friday evening, August 22nd.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
