Hi Hiking Freethinkers,
Weather permitting; there will be a hike on Sunday, June 17th. There will be 2 hikes from which to choose. Since the last several hikes have been relatively easy, the next hike will be far more difficult.
Hike 1) Jones Park Loop. This hike begins with Seven Bridges Trail then goes up to Jones Park. We will be coming down Bear Creek trail and returning on Buckhorn Trail. The round trip is about 7 miles with 1952 ft. elevation gain. I consider this hike to be somewhat difficult. It is rated a 3 boot in the Gazette Happy Trails. This hike is shorter than the next, but more difficult per mile.
Hike 2) Chautauqua Trail 715 to the top on Mount Herman. It starts on the south west edge of the Town of Palmer Lake and heads towards Mount Herman. There are short sections that the trail is extremely steep (in some locations to avoid walking in Monument Creek). Overall the trail has a relatively gradual incline. I would rate this trail as intermediate to somewhat difficult. Round trip is 10 to 12 miles to the top of Mount Herman, about 1500 ft. elevation gain.
We will be stopping to eat snacks around noon on all of these hikes. The hikes should end late afternoon.
We will be meeting at a parking lot away from the trailhead for both of these hikes and we will be leaving the parking lot by 9:00 AM (because of how warm it is in the morning during this part of the year. We will be switching back to a 10:00 AM start later in the year.)
p.s. If you vote for a hike and that is the one selected, you are expected to attend. If you do not, your vote will count less in the future.
