Book Discussion Eastern Ave Branch

We'll be discussing a book by Matthew McCormick called, "Atheism and the Case Against Christ." This book is a primer for atheism and covers persuasive arguments in a thoughtful way. Many reviewers say he covers new territory with this book. McCormick is a professor of philosophy at Sacramento State University. The book is reasonably priced at Amazon. Rock Island Library also has a copy.

Great to see everyone. Had 3 new comers! The book is a slow read and very comprehensive about the points it makes. The author boils the case down to a few main points: Jesus didn't perform miracles and couldn't possibly have risen from the dead and shouldn't you try to seek truth and live an honest life?

Sorry, Dan, Suzanne, Patti, et al--we won't be at this book discussion either. Just to let you know, we found some land and plan to make an offer to buy to build! You will all be invited to come help!! It will need paint, siding and bird feeders! Hope it gets done before the first 2014 snow! Enjoy Bob's cookies for me!
Hey--anyone going to the Women in Secularism Conference in Alexandria, VA., May 16-18 this year? Email me if you are... Patti and I had a great time last year!

Done reading "Atheism and the case against Christ" by Matthew S. McCormick. Half way thru "Moral Landscape" by Harris? Harris uses fMRI to study "moral" "reasoning" which turns out to be anything but. Also finished "The God Argument" by A.C. Grayling.
Suzanne: "To avoid the truth because it is unpalatable" problem is why everybody needs to take lots of laboratory courses. Nature does it her way, never your way. Science students really get the nonsense knocked out of them. It is a jolt every day.

The book I ordered came yesterday in the mail and was under $10. I'm liking it so far. Lots of good quotes e.g. "To avoid the truth because it is unpalatable or frightening is intellectual cowardice."

Still reading the RI copy. Says we have a duty to defeat religion.
