Roy Zimmerman at the Secular Hub

Zimmerman is a satirical songwriter whose new show is called “Funny Songs and Bad Advice.”  He brings plenty of both to Denver Sunday, September 8 at 7 pm for a performance at the Secular Hub, 3100 Downing Street.

Admission is $20 general admission, $15 for Hub members. THERE WILL BE A CASH BAR WHERE BEER AND WINE WILL BE AVAILABLE.

“Don’t let the bedbugs bite - but it’s okay if they nuzzle.”

Zimmerman’s funny songs are rhyme-intensive satirical originals recalling the sting of Tom Lehrer and the stridency of Phil Ochs.  These are songs with a punch line and a purpose.  Some sample titles: “The Faucet’s on Fire!,” “Abstain With Me,” “I Want a Marriage Like They Had in the Bible.“  His “Creation Science 101” is a YouTube video with over a million views.

“Eat a lot of greens...from a bachelor’s refrigerator.”

In thirteen albums over twenty years, Zimmerman has been bringing people together with what he calls “the healing power of ridicule.”  His songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He has recorded for Warner/Reprise Records.  He’s been profiled on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and he’s a featured blogger for the Huffington Post.

Zimmerman tours constantly, playing for the most progressive audiences in some of the least progressive places in America.  “I get accused of preaching to the converted, but I don’t think of it that way.  I think of it as entertaining the troops.”

“Give up,” he says with a smile.  “That’s the worst advice I can offer.  I meet a lot of people who are disillusioned and fed up with politics.  I think I can actually provide hope and encouragement if I can say to these folks, in a satirical way, ‘when everything seems hopeless, Give Up.’”

At times, Zimmerman wears his heart on his Left sleeve.  “Hope and Change is what you voted for,” he sings, “...but you know the slogan always needed just one more word: Hope, Struggle and Change.”

Sing Out! Magazine writes, “Zimmerman is a guy on the left skewering folks on the right with rapier-sharp lyrics ... underneath the caustic satire is a man who is surprisingly optimistic.”

“He simultaneously inspires me and makes me laugh my ass off,” says comedian/author Paul Krassner.

Terrific show. Love the Zimmermans' thinking processes. Hoping to see another show, at The Secular Hub, next spring.

This was a fantastic show. Many, many thanks to those who organized it, and many more to Roy for a great evening. The only disappointment, is that more people didn't show up - the place should have been packed!

I caught Roy's show Saturday night and it was great. He has several new songs that speak strongly about the power of common folk to overcome the political tricks plaguing our country today.

I just want to add that we will have a special event liquor license for this show, so we will have a cash bar serving beer and wine.
