Secular Hub Movie Night: Ray Comfort Craziness

Ray Comfort is a New Zeleand-born Christian minister and evangelist. Comfort is most famously known by secularists as "The Banana Man" because of his short YouTube video with Kirk Cameron stating how the banana is the 'Atheist's Nightmare.' (RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! IT'S POTASSIUM!!!) Comfort has been able to receive some notoriety for his debates, however, in February 2009, Comfort challenged Richard Dawkins to a debate, offering to donate $10,000 to him. Dawkins, who had previously stated a general policy not to debate with creationists, said he would agree to do it if Comfort made a $100,000 donation to the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, a non-profit organization. Comfort has not been able to reach agreeable terms with Dawkins on a formal debate.

Comfort started Living Waters Publications and has produced 180 Movie: Changing the Heart of a Nation, a film intended to change the minds of pro-abortion supporters, and, most recently, Evolution vs. God

The film '180' begins by showing images of the Holocaust, and stating that Hitler sanctioned the killing of 11 million people. This is followed by Comfort interviewing people about Adolf Hitler; their responses indicate a lack of historical knowledge, although he also finds a neo-Nazi who claims to love Hitler. Comfort proposes a hypothetical situation to his interviewees, asking if they would kill Hitler if they had the opportunity at that time in history. He asks more hypotheticals dealing with what his interviewees might do in other circumstances related to the Holocaust.

The documentary concludes with Comfort stating that over 50 million abortions have occurred to date; he calls this the "American Holocaust". He then gives his interviewees the 'Good Person Test' which they all 'fail' and he preaches at them some more...

Evolution vs. God is Comfort's newest attempt at trying to prove how much he understands science and evolution. Comfort does his usual song and dance where he questions students on college campuses (who may or may not have just gotten out of bed) with misleading wording and clever editing to make them seem very uninformed about science and clueless about evolution. He spends most of the interview time with these poor students preaching to them about god in a way that has nothing to do with his initial questions on evolution. He then speaks with leading professors, such as PZ Myers, on evidence for evolution. More editing ensues.

When they are unable to give him the exact type of evidence he is looking for Comfort deems them unable to prove evolution. He then gives students the 'Good Person Test' which they all 'fail' and he preaches at them some more...

Secular Hub members are invited to hang out and watch a movie on our BIG screen at the Secular Hub on Thursday nights! Drinks, snacks, and popcorn will be available for sale. Doors will be open at 6:30pm and the movie will begin at 7:00pm.

Movies will sometimes have a secular theme, sometimes they'll just be things we all vote on and want to see. We will update individual events with the movie when available.

This is a recurring weekly event, subject to other secular events that require the Secular Hub space. We'll make sure to update the meetup each week with the movie selection and notify when they are cancelled.

Note: Secular Hub meetings such as movie night are open only to dues paying members of the Secular Hub. Sign up on line at http://www.secularhub.org/membership/ or in person at the Hub.

Very interesting. I had not heard of him before. A whole night of U-tube might be interesting.

Although we are frequently characterized as making fun of religion, I don't think that is something that regularly happens at the Secular Hub. However, tonight, we are most certainly making fun of this particular crazy-nutbag-religious guy. There is a difference, but if it is too slight for you, you may want to miss this one.

Each movie is about 30 minutes long. Plenty of time to watch one, take a break, and watch the other followed by discussion.

Sorry for the late update but we are set now for the Ray Comfort Craziness night. This one will be fairly interactive, with people yelling at the screen as the stupidity proceeds. Come on in and have some fun!

Yes, I love movies. In fact I was thinking of a movie I loved that I think would be really fun: "Quest for Fire". It came out in the 80's, and when I went and saw it in the theatre, people just started speaking aloud to each other. It was informational rather than typically rude. Just a thought.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
