Volunteer Event: Denver Public Library Used Book Sale

From June 12th to 15th, Denver Public Library (DPL) will be holding their annual Used Book Sale, offering over 70,000 books, CDs, DVDs and audio books at bargain prices.

Many in our community are passionate about reading, as is evidenced by no fewer than two book groups, our tutoring association with Reading Partners, and the many thoughtful and educated discussions amongst our members.

So this year, we'd like to ask your help in making this event a success on what is probably their biggest day--Saturday, June 14th.

Volunteer Positions include:

• Adders

• Cashiers

• Volunteer Check In Greeter

• Rest-A-Bag Attendant

• Book Re-Stocker

We have committed to providing a set number of volunteers for the event.  To help us ensure we meet our goal, please RSVP in the affirmative only if you can commit to attending.

-- Additional Information from our Hosts --

All required training has been scheduled into our volunteer shift.  Those assigned as Greeters working in the Volunteer Tent will need to arrive 30 minutes prior to shift time.

Some helpful information:

 ·  Upon arrival, please register at the table located in the volunteer Check-in Tent and pick up your apron to be worn during your shift.  Please check the pockets for personal items, before returning it at the end of your shift.

·  Dress comfortably.  Dress appropriately for the weather.

·  For security purposes, bring as few personal items as possible and please do not bring items of value.  There will be no secured storage space and the library will not be responsible for lost items.

·  Complimentary parking will be available in the Cultural Center Parking Garage at 12th Avenue & Broadway; enter the garage from 12th Avenue.  Vouchers will be passed out in the Volunteer Tent.

·  Lunch or Dinner will be provided, along with water and beverages during your volunteer shift.

Hey, Y'all... For those of you who are readers, just wanted to let you know that there are at least two book groups in our local secular community. One is the Denver Atheist Book Club--organized in part by Tristan and Julia--and the other is the Humanist Discussion Group. You can find info about them on the Denver Atheist and Humanists of Colorado Meetups, respectively.

From summer sunshine to rain and hail, a great day!

I got there early, did some bag rest time, then met Scot, Chauncey, Fatima, Charles and the others, watched some lady's bag of books by the horse on the big chair for a long time as she brought the car around, then did some adding up with Kathy and Chauncey and other characters. We should have had a little music system playing the Violent Femmes' "Add It Up" on repeat for that.

Apparently whoever set up the food for volunteers really loves carbs, in both pasta and cake / doughnut forms, but it sure tasted good.

On further review, I realize the song "Add it Up" has very little to do with books, adding things, literacy advocacy, libraries, public service, or anything related to volunteering or selling books to benefit a library. At all. It's more about asking someone's boy who went and got him a gun to not shoot you, and other weird stuff.

Very worthwhile volunteering event. There was a little bit of confusion/disorganization around the library group having all our names, and knowing what 'job' each of us was supposed to be doing - but a very minor issue in what was overall a very positive event.

We're running about 15-20 minutes late due to traffic. Be there as soon as we can

Apparently there is a wait list for volunteers? No idea if I'm expected to be there tomorrow. Planning on showing up at noon, but please contact me if I won't be needed.

I have some things I need to do tomorrow, so I'll give up my space to somebody on the waiting list.

I'll give up my space for one of you guys on the waiting list. Have fun tomorrow!

I just spoke to Andrea of the Friends of the Library; she said that they can find some task that will keep me from being on my feet too much. I've put myself on the waitlist.

Because of a problem with my back, I cannot stand up for a long time. Can I be guaranteed a gig where I am sitting down?

Definitely a worthy cause, but I will be out of town this weekend.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
