Monthly Potluck

  • Jan 12, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

The January 12 SVVSFT gathering will include an earlier than usual meeting/supper. Hosts will provide two main entrees' - one vegetarian. Please bring light/simple accompanyments: appetizers, finger foods, fruit, vegetables, bread, simple sides or deli selections, dessert items. Soft beverages will be provided. BYO wine/beer. Please don't hesitate to join us if you did not RSVP. In addition to a short meeting that will include discussing possibilities for our next public speaker and options for affiliations, we will decide when/where we will meet in the near future. There will be a facilitated group conversation exploring our common identity as a group. What does it mean to be a freethinker or secular humanist? Should we reach out to progressive religous groups to explore common ground, e.g. separation of church and state? What are the common/core ideas, principles, issues and practices that unite us and what are our goals?

Have a great get together. When I joined the group a few days ago I already had plans for Saturday, but hope to make next month's potluck.

We plan to attend on the 12th. Sorry I missed the meeting yesterday. About the only thing that will keep us away next week would be illness or a last minute call for a wedding ceremony. Business has to come first.

    Replying to Phil's query:

We are what we are, and outside of being polite, we should be genuine and not tie ouselves up in knots about what we say, whether in jest or otherwise. I am personally an ardent free thinker and once in awhile I'll crack a joke, etc. People will show up with varying attitudes and agendas and some will be compatible with our group, others not. Outside of being warm and welcoming, we can only hope that we present something newcomers find compatible with what they are seeking.

The purpose of the group is to create a community where people who don't believe in god can enjoy and help each other. Part of that is being able to say whatever you want about religion. Anyone who is offended by that wouldn't want to join our group anyway. I agree with Al that we should just be ourselves. Most of us have come from a religion or been around others who have made an atheist feel the same way your son did. Probably best that any spiritual person be forewarned by the member in o
