Requesting Nuts-and-Bolts Semantic Web Help

Hi Semantic Web Meet Up,

I was introduced to Semantic Web at a Refresh San Diego Meet Up where Barbara lead an introduction and discussion.  SW was totally new to me and more than I could digest in one sitting, but Barbara's presentation piqued my interest.

Back in June, Marco Neumann sent out a much welcome link to Sando Hawke's technical introduction to Semantic Web.  I watched that video at least four times trying to get a handle on the concept and how to use it in a website I manage.

I continued to research the subject by reviewing blogs and websites when I stumbled across Calais.  Cool, I thought.  I've found an application that will analyis and install the tags for me.  I downloaded the free application tried to Semantic Web-ize my .NET website.  Well, long story, short the application didn't work.  I kept getting 'fail' messages.  Lots of online research.  Couldn't solve the problem (with this software).

So here are my questions:

1) Is there another free or low-priced application that anyone can recommend that would analyze and install the rdf tags for me?

2) do you recommend using this type of software at all?  Or am I better off installing the tags manually?

3) can I / should I put simple triples in the <head> of my site?

4) can anyone point me to a site(s) where I can research the subject further.  I'm looking for some how-to information rather than conceptual information.

Thanks taking the time to read my post.
