Re: [Semantic-Web-San-Diego] This evening's meetup!

Marco Neumann is the meetup alliance organizer, and has created a site:

This gives a more accurate count of alliance members, as some people join multiple meetups (I think that can be valuable as one can see what the other meetup groups are doing, especially for the organizers - generating ideas for meetups needs to be creative & up to date!!)  The page is actually very informative and you may want to take a look at it!

After I sent the last e-mail, meetup just gave me a notification that I can send messages to ALL semantic web meetup members via the above group e-mail id, & from any browser, so I am possibly duplicating this message (there seem to be many e-mail ids for the group - group - a list suffix and an announce suffix!), so you may receive this information twice:

As this is our second meeting only, we will start with a roundtable of everyone introducing themselves and what their specific interests in semantic web/web 3.0 are. (That will also help us focus future meetups based on everyone's specific interests & needs).

We will then take a look - via powerpoint - at where we stand today in terms of existing already commercialized semantic/web 3.0 applications, that typically have not made it to the semantic tech radar! (Maybe because they are already commercialized productions!). (Like offshoots of old Darpa programs!!)

Also, how a web 3.0 initiative can stimulate the economy, as well as national and global efforts that have concurrent goals and programs. They are also ready & able to provide us with assistance in order to stimulate promotion, adoption and commercialization of this technology in terms of opensource applications, APIS to their systems, etc.

We will also take a brief look at some IJCAI-09 demos - video - as the focus there was primarily academic, there was not much in the way of commercialized products other than in robotics (mostly wireless!) - some of which claim they have semantics in their future!

looking forward to seeing you all there

Barbara Starr

BTW, at the next semantic web meetup of meetups TIm Berners Lee will be keynoting and this will be @ ISWIC, which will be added as a sponsor to all the semantic web meetup sites.  Just an FYI, Globally we are almost at the 5,000 mark!
