Simplifying Semantic Solutions for Biomedical Applications: How to More Effectively Utilize Ontologies Using The Web

Understanding and utilizing micro-level information for clinical analysis (e.g., patient blood chemistries and other objectively measurable criteria) can provide significant advantages for improved understandings of disease states, their related symptoms and conditions, methods for diagnoses, and treatment efficacy. Combining these kinds of information types requires applying tacit knowledge to one's data - which is often gained from disparate sources that, to date, have not always been readily available to researchers, clinicians, and others working in bio-medical domains. Making greater use of these kinds of data depends on the ability to model and map important relationships - an area where ontologies and semantic technologies have proven to be quite effective in providing powerful knowledge management capabilities.
Knowledge management systems based on ontologies provide solutions for designing, managing and transmitting data patterns by linking information, at various levels of granularity (e.g., from genotypic to phenotypic analysis). Ultimately, intelligence gained at the more fine-grained levels of research (e.g., molecular biology, proteomics, genomics, etc.), can be more easily and rapidly applied to real-world disease treatments and therapies.
Implementing ontologies in biomedical domains, however, can prove to be difficult, since they are not easy to build, implement and maintain over time. New technology approaches are needed that provide easy-to-use, straightforward interfaces whereby individuals can use the power of ontology-driven knowledge management systems without having to directly interact with complex ontology models, query languages, complex logics, and the like.
This talk will demonstrate one such technology approach developed by CTG - called the Medical Management Portal (MedMaP). MedMaP utilizes rich internet applications to provide both researchers and clinicians with a customizable set of tools that display ontology-driven content in a graphically compelling manner. In turn, users can achieve powerful insights into their data and easily share those insights with one another over the web.
