Help Save Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge from a Proposed Rocket Launch Site

The State Agency Space Florida is proposing to build a 200 acre rocket launch site north of the established NASA launch area.  The new space port would be at the north end of the Merritt Island wildlife Refuge.  Human activities such as birding and fishing as well as bathing at Canaveral National Seashore would necessarily become limited.  The impacts on habitat for wildlife would threaten the survival of hundreds of species.  The US Fish and Wildlife Agency has published a document describing these threats which you can read here:

On February 11 and 12, 2014, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be holding public hearings regarding the proposal.  The meeting format will include an open house workshop from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The FAA will provide an overview of the environmental process from 6:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. followed by a public comment period from 6:15 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Is a new spaceport necessary?  Wouldn't the existing NASA site be ideal for such a venture?  Should we put at risk a natural area of Florida that has become popular with naturalists and tourists from around the world?

Please plan to attend one or both of these important public meetings.  Our participation will offset lobbying by the commercial interests which are sure to attend.

The Titusville public meeting was fabulous. Sam Kendall mentioned the fact that the world is in a mass extinction crisis, among other fine comments. Very true, Sam. You don't destroy one of the nation's premier wintering areas for migrants when we already are in a mass extinction crisis. 200 acres? In order to supply plumbing and power and infrastructure to Shiloh, the refuge would have to be torn up to build that complex.

Many key comments were made. It was a joy to see a huge turnout. If anybody needs help in writing a letter to Stacey Zee, or email her, I can help you. We MUST get those comments in by Feb 21. I urge you and all your friends to contact me and I will gladly go over key points to mention in addition to your thoughts and with your comments, we CAN stop this ludicrous proposal by Governor Rick Scott. Remember, Space Florida is a political space program, not a true private venture.

This was a great turnout for those opposing a rocket site in the Refuge. But remember, this is only the beginning of the process. We need this many people and more to show up for the final EIS public hearings next year.

If for some reason you can't attend either one of the public meetings on this most crucial of all conservation issues, please send a "snail-mail" to the key person Stacey Zee. If you need any help in writing a short note, contact me please.

If anyone would like to car-pool to either the Daytona Beach meeting or the Titusville meeting, Feb 11 and Feb 12, contact me.

If you can bring a child or grandchild, friend or relative, please do. Students and young people have the most lose if a big piece of Merritt Island is destroyed so if you know a young one to join us, that would be great, but certainly anybody you know would be welcome to join us.

Please get as many people you can to write to Stacey Zee expressing your belief that this is a wildlife refuge and it is not a place for a commercial venture and you are opposed to the proposal.
