Lake Sonoma - Half A Canoe Trail

PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION PRIOR TO PUTTING IN YOUR RSVP

RSVP etiquette must be followed. Only RSVP when you can commit to attend. Once you have RSVP'd if you have an emergency that means you have to cancel please change your RSVP by 5pm the prior day.

The 6-mile Half-a-Canoe Loop trail follows an old fire road and it meanders down to the shores of Lake Sonoma while offering gorgeous vistas of the lake and grassy hillsides. The return trip takes you back up to the ridge with a climb of approximately 1400 feet.  This hike will delight you with sweeping views of both lake arms, the marina and the dam while providing you with a great workout.  The trail starts off flat for the first mile or so....then it drops down to the lake for a delightful stretch and then we climb, climb, climb back up to the ridge to get back to our cars.

We will find a location to stop and eat so please remember to bring something along. Also bring plenty of water and probably not a bad idea to dress in layers.

Dogs are welcome, however we do request they be kept on a short leash.

CARPOOLING:

1.  SANTA ROSA - Coddingtown Library – Leave the parking in front of the Coddingtown Library at 9:00 a.m.

2.  WINDSOR – Airport Cinemas – Leave this location at 9:10. Meet in the corner of the parking lot closest to Airport Blvd and Aviation Blvd.

Please indicate when you RSVP where you will be meeting us.

If you plan on meeting us there here are the detailed directions:

From Highway 101 in Healdsburg head 10.3 miles northwest on Dry Creek Road to the base of Warm Springs Dam and Lake Sonoma Visitor Center on the right. (Dry Creek Road becomes Skaggs Springs Road in the park)

From the visitor center, continue 3.6 miles, crossing the bridge over Lake Sonoma, to the posted No Name Flat parking lot on the left. (En route, the road becomes Rockpile Road)  Keep driving until you see the well posted parking lot on your left.  You WILL pass other dirt parking areas but continue on until you see the sign for No Name parking lot.

Scenic area and had interesting up and downs. There was shade There was sun. There was enough challenge. And as to the trail- well now that I've developed expertise from a day of trail building- there are some spots that need some filling in. Just saying.

I really enjoyed the hike. It was pretty hot in the sun and the hills pretty steep, but it was still fun. Great group of people.

So far it looks like we have John Hills, Dianne, Suzanne, Carl, Maureen and myself meeting at Coddingtown - leaving there at 9:00 a.m. Anyone else?

I've never hiked this far but I've been wanting to see more of Lake Sonoma since I only live 8 miles away.

    August 21, 2013

    • Kendra

Please do be sure that you can do that far. We will stop for lunch somewhere along the way and we do stop and take photos and such. However, that being said we do try to keep moving and do expect people to be responsible for themselves. Remember it could easily be quite hot that day so please be sure to dress appropriately and bring plenty of water with you.
