Taylor Mountain - New Trail

Please join us for a hike along Taylor Mountain’s newest trail…and one in which several SWAG members helped build!  Though the county is naming it the Todd Creek Trail we prefer to call it the JSK (John, Suzanne and Kendra) trail!

This trail will take us along the Western side of the mountain which has some beautiful views. There are also many shady areas in case it is warm at this time. I honestly do not know how far or how steep this trail is, though I believe it is approximately one mile then it would connect up to the Western Route. I do not believe it will be as steep as the initial trail which for those of you that have done it, know is a bit on the steep side.

Once there some people may wish to go on up to the top while others may feel they have done enough. That will be strictly up to each individual. Please consider this when carpooling.

It does not appear on the map as yet but you can take a look at what they do have here: http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/uploadedFiles/Parks/Get_Outdoors/Parks/TaylorMtnTrailMap.pdf

For more information about the park overall you can see the master plan here: http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/uploadedFiles/Parks/About_Us/Project_Details/TaylorMountainFinalMND_2012-09-04.pdf  and then if you scroll down to page 35 of the PDF (or B-24) you can actually see where the trail is (look for Todd Creek)

Love the cow (and calf) photos as well as the photo-shopping of the sign to reflect what should be the trail's real name!

I loved this hike...although I turned around when I got to the lower ridge with views of SR....it was still a really nice walk up....and a great group of people.

Thanks for the photos. And good job "non-leading", Kendra! I think it is great that we can accommodate several levels of hikers in the same group. Up to the top, we figured it was a 5 mile roundtrip, although it feels longer on the way up.

    1 · October 26, 2013

    • Kendra

Yea, I rather like the "non-leading". But yes, Joya I agree that it is nice to be able to accommodate different levels of hikers. Makes our group a bit unique.

Love the "non leading" comment. I had tried to organize a hiking group in Mendocino County. Got told "We are too spontaneous to be organized." mmm could be some of that whacky weed too. I sure appreciate the effort that goes into this group.

Fun hike. Thanks Kendra for exercising those awesome powers to give us a beautiful day, wonderful views and a good group of hikers.

Hey John...I do my best! :)

      October 26, 2013

  • Dianne H.

Great hike! Yeah...now there are more switchbacks for us that don't want to do the steep hills! Wonderful new trail. Thanks Kendra, Suzanne and John Hills for working on this portion. I loved seeing all of the baby cows.

    October 26, 2013

    • Kendra

Not sure how you came down. Suzanne and I did a portion of a trail I don't think we had done before. Maybe but I didn't remember it. Took us to the back road that was pretty steep going down. But this time wasn't so bad. Not much loose gravel and really well packed down - made it much easier.

      October 26, 2013

    • Dianne H.

We back-tracked the same route we took up, with all of the switch-backs. We had to say good-bye to the baby cows and admire your work again.

      October 26, 2013

  • Joya H

Great group today, as usual. Welcome to all the new folks. After making it to the top and back, I'm plenty sore! No pain...

Hey everyone. Look forward to meeting in person. How do i find out about hikes ahead of time sothat I can save the date/time?
Also, do some of you attend movies on a regular basis?

    October 26, 2013

    • Kendra

Connie - see your profile - i responded there

Even though they named the trail wrong I still loved it and proud that my hands (and back, and shoulders and neck) had a part in it. Love the new trail as at least there is some shade there. Lovely day for a hike good group as usual. People went at their own pace and distance which is as it should be.

I have to miss this too, I am on the Garcinia diet which you can only do for a few months. You have to take it a half hour before meals. I have to take this opportunity to get some weight off, if you've seem me you'll know. I really wish I was there. Have a great walk everyone.

    October 26, 2013

    • Joya H

Sorry to miss you, Janis, it looks like a gorgeous day today. See you all at the parking lot, I'll drive to BevMo and see if anyone needs a ride.

Am sorry I'm going to have to miss this. My neck & back went out yesterday and I was hoping it was going to be better this morning.

Is anyone else meeting at Rohnert Park Expressway Northbound P&R besides John Hills and Moira? I can drive but I will probably try to make it to the top of the hill this time if you're planning on carpooling with me. Let me know.

    October 25, 2013

    • John H.

I plsn to ride so long as it's not in a pet carrier on the roof.

Yes I'd like to ask how long of a hike? I do have to drive a ways to get there so I'm hoping it's a longer hike. Thank you

    October 22, 2013

    • John H.

With this group, it is more like "How long of a hike do you want." Not many rules here other than enjoy yourself.

I'll meet you Northerners at Target!

    October 22, 2013

  • Kendra

In response to several questions regarding length of this hike. As indicated in the write up above I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT LENGTH OF THE NEW TRAIL. We have never hiked this trail before as it has only recently opened. I am sure that some people will continue on to the top of the hill and others might not. That will be strictly up to each individual. I honestly know nothing more than what is written above which is one reason I posted the two links.

    October 22, 2013

  • Janis

Or can you walk back and not be in danger. I wish I could take a long hike, but I can only do two miles.

    October 22, 2013

  • Janis

Am I reading this correctly it's about two miles?....

I am going straight to park, as I have another commitment I need to get to in Healdsburg afterward.

    October 20, 2013

Kendra your sense of direction strikes again - we southerners leave from the NORTHBOUND RP P&R!

    1 · October 2, 2013

    • John H.

North bound Park and Ride at Rohnert Expressway and 101 works best.

      October 5, 2013

    • Kendra

See my post above...I went ahead and changed it to the Northbound. Yea, next time I'll just ask a few of you before I post it. :)

      October 5, 2013

  • Kendra

Ok, ok....for all you southerners I have changed the location to the NORTHBOUND Park and Ride.

    October 5, 2013

  • Dianne H.

I'll be at the North bound Park and Ride at Rohnert Park Expressway and 101 at 9:30 and I'll be happy to drive.

  • JohnT

I've done this trail in the past. Some area is a bit steep but take your time . It's not a race. I like it because it gives you different views/shade.

    October 4, 2013

    • Kendra

John this is a NEW trail that is opening on 10/5. We have done the main one before and yep it is steep. This new trail should - if I am correct - take us along the side of the mountain.

      1 · October 4, 2013

    • JohnT

Ok great I'm going to Taylor for a short hike...

      October 4, 2013

  • Dianne H.

Looking forward to seeing your handiwork!

    October 2, 2013

    • Kendra

Actually I am too as I have not seen the finished trail.

      1 · October 3, 2013

  • John H.

Hey, I vote for Kendra, Suzanne and John as a name for the trail. A newcomer is never top banana, as they say on Broadway. Just too funny. Have to be there.

    1 · October 2, 2013

    • Kendra

LOL...was going to call it just that but didn't want to appear all that egotistical! Plus KSJ just didn't work quite as well as JSK.

      1 · October 2, 2013

  • Penny

Sorry I missed the hike. I have done the trails in Taylor Mountain and love the area.
