Wildflower Walks Are Back!!

  • Mar 22, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

SWAG kind of has it's beginnings in the Regional Parks wildflower walks back in the spring of 2012. It's great to see they are back again. At the time they gave our group an introduction to all the great regional parks Sonoma County has to offer. So far I'm only posting their 1st one on the calendar - Native Magic. Anyone is free to post others that strike their fancy.

From the park newsletter: Our spring wildflower walks begin March 22 and run weekly through May 3. These free walks are led by Master Gardener Phil Dean, who says the dry weather creates a new perspective for plant sightings. "You'll see things you've never before seen. I can't predict exactly what but you'll notice different plants, and I encourage you to get out and see them," This walk starts at 10 a.m., lasts about two hours, and has an easy pace. Also new this year will be themed content, with Phil sharing stories relevant to the plants in each park.

I'll post carpooling spots two weeks out. We can also talk about having a picnic lunch right there afterwards. We have sometimes kept it loose with people bringing their own lunch versus a potluck.

Nice photos - but man I'm short! Also, Kendra where is that second photo you took of Dianne??

Suzanne...are you just now realizing that? :) And I just put up the 2nd pic of Dianne...

Well it's different when you're confronted with it! Like seeing your DMV photo.

That was a great walk. Was talking about it on our Monday walk. We in fact were talking about Oakgalls and not walking at night because of the poison oak gasses.

Large group, but it worked out. There were 27 of us with a few no-shows and extras. Welcome to those who were on their 1st Walkabout with us: Kathleen C., Kim and Dennis. Phil was very knowledgeable and patient as always and I thought he handled a group of 50 people all on his own very well. The weather was perfectly lovely, as was the company. Nice to see some faces I haven't in awhile and glad we all got to set and have lunch AND Carl's cookies for dessert!!

I think he told us that last year at Steelhead, and I thought it was something like if you camped under the poison oak at night, that something under the leaves dripped down on you.

      March 24, 2014

    • Rose

he said something about gases being released at night, so make sure you don't go to sleep in a field of poison oak!

Thank you for baking your delicious cookies, Carl...and you, too, Peter.

Near perfect...the weather was ideal for a walk, the park is wonderful, I learned about wildflowers, & my companions were friendly & interesting

Enjoyed the photos. I hiked here about 10 days earlier than your hike. Almost no flowers- well that I noticed. Little gem of a park and Glen Ellen- wow.

  • Regina L. M.

I posted earlier, but seems like my post did not get on here. Anyway, Thanks Ginny for the ride, that was really sweet of you. It was nice to meet you Peter, and everyone else that I have not seen at the walkabouts we have. I really enjoyed seeing the Sunshine plant before we went on our walk. That was really nice of our guide. Loved the flowers, and how he explained how the Pomo Indians used them. I will remember about the Poppy's and how the Golden Gate got it's name and the Balls that the Wasps make, as I know I will not remember all the names of the flowers. It was such a great day. Thanks Rose for everything.

Darn, I wish I'd thought of this earlier. A little topical music for this outing:

Sorry Rose, so busy with my mom (she had a stroke 5 years ago) I have not been checking up like I should on what is going on. I will meet you by library at 9:15.

      March 21, 2014

    • Kendra

From what I can tell it will be Barbara, Joya, Carl and me meeting at St. Francis Center. Between us I know we have at least 3 passes (one I will give to Suzanne when we get up there). Is there anyone else planning on meeting us at St. Francis Center???

      March 21, 2014

  • Rose

Today was the 1st time I've seen this posted on their website....Why they decided to do this on the same day they're doing a wildflower walk is not very good planning in my opinion. http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/_templates_parks/EventDetail.aspx?id=2147492129&date=Saturday%2C+March+22%2C+2014+9%3A00AM+-+12%3A00PM

Rose, have been busy with my mom. Is there still room for me to carpool with you guys meeting up in Coddingtown? I live right next door. If so, where in Coddingtown, next to the library, what?

    March 21, 2014

  • Kim C.

Looking forward to my first walkabout!

    March 21, 2014

  • Rose

I don't know how many cars the parking lot holds. From memory, it's not a huge parking lot, which is why I recommend people get there as early as possible. We have almost 30 people going and this event is open to the public. Additionally, this is a popular park and it will be a beautiful day. There is also an unofficial spot on hwy 12 next to the fence of the park that I have seen cars parked. I assume people not wanting to pay the fee use that spot.

    March 21, 2014

  • Yelena S

So if several people have park passes, how many cars can enter the park?

    March 21, 2014

  • Rose

We will be meeting inside the park where the main entrance is off hwy 12.

    March 21, 2014

  • Joan R.

Are we meeting at the entrance off Highway 12 or the entrance just north of the developmental center on Arnold Drive????

    March 21, 2014

  • Joan R.

I live in Sonoma so will meet you all at the park. Looking forward to seeing some wildflowers. Bring your hand lens!

Ginny & Regina - wondering if meeting at Coddingtown near library would work? How many can your car hold, Ginny? Also, I have a park pass that we can use.

Hi! I will be at the St. Francis Center at 9:15, I can drive or I'd love a ride. Can't wait to see the wildflowers and to spend the day with everyone. I've missed you!

Is anyone coming from Sebastopol area or that I could meet somewhere in between Seb & Santa Rosa to carpool? or somewhere in Western Santa Rosa....I have a park pass...

Rose, I live over by Coddingtown, not too far away from our creek walks.

This sounds like a lot of fun. To save on gas I would love to carpool with someone. Keep me informed on the carpooling areas.

    March 16, 2014

  • Barbara N.

I'm happy to meet others at the St. Francis center to carpool. Let's meet there around 9:15. My Prius can hold 3 others and I have a county park pass.

    March 13, 2014

  • Rose

Although no one has asked about, I wanted to mention. Dogs are allowed at the park and in fact they have a dog park there. There are no restrictions listed by the group leader re: dogs, but I wouldn't recommend bringing dogs on this type of walk....This is not a straight hike; there is a lot of stopping and starting as we listen to the guide(s), narrow paths at times and hard to say how many people total as this is open to the public. Some of my group leaders - and those who have been to the park more than I have and/or have dogs may also have thoughts on this. Thanks!

    March 12, 2014

  • Rose

Wanted to start talking about carpooling since we're less than 2 weeks away. I know 1 popular place to meet is the St. Francis Shopping center at the corner of Hwy 12 & Calistoga Road. There could be other carpool areas depending where people are coming from. You should plan on arriving at the park no later than 9:45 since they may ask people to sign-in etc. This is a county park so you will either need a pass or pay $7 to park. Am guessing there are a # of us that have a pass.
