This 4 1/2 mile loop trail to Red Hill takes you through an exposed landscape of grasslands and chaparral, providing beautiful views of Bodega Head on the coast and Willow Creek inland.
We will meet at the Shell Beach parking lot at 10:00, cross over Hwy. 1 and take the Red Hill trail to the top. A hidden path takes you to the shelter of a redwood grove and a huge fir tree covered in ferns. We will have our lunch in the shade of the trees, then return on the Pomo Canyon Trail, with a short detour to Lookout Hill for stunning views of the Russian River watershed out to Jenner.
There is some moderate elevation gain and loose gravel on the road up to the intersection of the trails. Trekking poles are recommended. It can be windy, foggy or hot, so wear layers to be prepared for any type of weather. Lots of water, sunscreen and a hat is also advised and bring a lunch.
Shell beach has free parking in the lot and restrooms. Carpooling is a great idea. If you are willing to drive and have extra room in your car, please let us know the best place to meet you. Usual spots are the Petaluma and Rohnert Park P&R off Hwy. 101 and the PG&E P&R on River Road.
