Hike the Big Trees Trail at Indian Tree Preserve, Novato

The Marin IJ has called this trail "Novato's perfect hike through redwood trees." The trail is approx. 3 miles round trip with "comfortably graded" switchbacks to the top and back. There are additional trails which could be added for a longer hike. This is a good summer hike as it is mostly through trees and has a nice view when you get to the top. For more info you can go to www.marincountyparks.org, click on Open Space, and then on Indian Tree. There is no parking fee and also no restrooms.

Well this was my first hike with SWAG... I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone showed up on time and the group started about 10:10. I was impressed by the pace Suzanne set and maintained. Although we did stop occasionally to enjoy the beautiful views and forest, my GPS phone app calculated our moving speed to be just over 2 hours to do the 6 mile hike. And, that was with over a three thousand six hundred foot altitude gain.
I have walked further, but I would go again with this group of ladies in a heart beat. No complaining even after the fourth mile, and lots of smiles and good cheer. What a nice group to be associated with.

I did not even mind Suzanne advertising a six mile loop as a three mile loop. We all did well.

Thanks for allowing me to be a Walkabouter. Look forward to the next time out there.

Oh yes, shouldn't this thing have spell check. I am not used to having to type carefully. Or maybe I just do not know how to engage it.

Just cruised the slideshow - thanks to all who posted the great photos! Particularly liked the horse whose expression clearly said, "I'm bored and I want to go home."

Yep I remember it too Wendy! and those trails are mighty narrow...too narrow for humans and horses!

Glad you all enjoyed it even if the website lied about the distance. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

If any one needs help with directions let me know - I used to live right down the road from here!

Ess that does look right. As I recall the last part seemed more than what the maps say so just keep going till you hit the dirt road.

Sounds like a great hike. I've never heard of it, so it will be fun to find a new place. Coming from Sonoma if anyone wants to carpool.

    Hi all:
This is quite a drive for me for a three mile hike. Maybe some of you would be interested in taking some additional trails to get it up to 5-7?

My first try with the group. Looking forward to the fun.

Planning a walk at Annadel tomorrow. I start at Montgomery Drive Spring Lake dam, to Spring Lake trail, to Canyon trail, to Marsh trail, to South Burma trail, to Richardson trail, to Channel Drive, back to the dam. About 12 +- miles, about a mile up and down, a little over four hours. Maybe a walk the group could try in the future?

Gene - you indicated you are planning a walk "tomorrow". If that means you are not going on this one please do change your RSVP so we know not to look for you. Also note that anyone can post a hike.

Yes Gene - I would definitely refer you to North Bay Hikes or the Wanderers - 6 miles is usually our maximum
