Hi Folks,

Now its spring and a great time to hike the great mountains of Korea. And perhaps the greatest of the hiking mountains in Korea is Seorak Mountain.
And when hiking experts talk about Seorak Mountain they always include two places that is a must.

Perhaps the greatest view point in Seoraksan is the masterpiece view at the highest peak (Dae Chung Bong). At 1708 meters (5603 feet) it is 3rd highest of the big 3. Jeju Halasan is 1950 meters (6397 feet) and Jirisan is 1915 meters. Since you can begin the hike at 980 meters, the elevation rise is 700 meters (or about 2400 feet).

And the other must hike trail is the Dinosaur Ridge trail for its very impressive series of rocky peaks.
These two areas cannot be seen by your regular Seoraksan sightseers. The views from cable car peak or other easy hikes from Seorak Valley (outer Seorak) cannot compare to the scale of these sights of inner Seorak.

The Giant Dae Chung Bong and Dinosaur Ridge Combo Course:
Probably the most giant of day hikes in Seoraksan, you start at Han Gae Ryung overpass (980 meters) and head up to Dae Chung Bong peak (5 hrs). Then from the peak head down to Hee Woon Gak (1hr) which is the starting point of the Dragon Ridge trail (5hrs) and then hike down to Bi Sun Dae (2 hrs). From Bi Sun Dae its easy stroll down to Seorak Valley (1hr).
Total Hike/Walk Time = 14 hours or so.

If you feel you are not up to taking on the Dinosaur Ridge, you can choose to head down the mountain just before start of the Dinosaur Ridge trail.

Bisundae is a good place to rest and get makgeolli or beer and pajun. We can all meet here.

The Dae Chung Bong Course:
You start at Han Gae Ryung overpass (980 meters) and head up to Dae Chung Bong peak (5 hrs). Then from the peak head down to Hee Woon Gak (1hr). From here continue heading down Chun Bul Dong Valley and on to Bi Sun Dae (3 hours). From Bi Sun Dae its easy stroll down to Seorak Valley (1hr).
Total Hike/Walk Time = 10 hours or so.

The site you see open before your eyes at the peak will not disappoint you. It is truly spectacular. And what better way than to conquer these two most scenic parts of Seorak Mountain than to leave all of the heavy baggage on the bus and do the hike carrying only a camera and water bottle.

This ultimate hiking combo course is not recommended for the 1st time hikers or those with physical conditions. The non-hiking option:
If you are not up for hiking you have the option to go with the bus to a nearby jjimjilbang facility which is open 24hrs so you can get some shuteye. You are free to look around the city or beach. Then you can come to Seorak valley by around 3PM so you can look around. We will all meet at entrance to Seorak valley at 5:30PM so we can depart to Naksan Beach which is a 25min ride. After the giant hike those who wish we will be dropped off at a nice sauna for a relaxing bath. Then we will all kick back all evening having a nice meal and beers. Its possible to stay in a tent on the beach if you prefer. We will stay at a very nice beachside motel.

Then on Sunday we will then head up the coastline to the Lavender festival around 11AM. They will have herb bibimbob and some hands on experience things like soap making. People who prefer to stay on a beach you can stay and we can pick you up on the way back home.

The plan is:
6/25 (Fri)
11:30PM Depart Seoul

6/26 (Sat)
3:00AM Arrive Seorak Mountain (Han Gae Ryung overpass) and Start Hike
5:30PM Depart Seorak Mountain and go to Beachside Motel (Sauna stop on the way maybe possible)

Anyone find a blue Marmot rain jacket or a black Patagonia shirt that were left on the bus after "The Ultimate Seoraksan Hike"?

Suzanne - The banks in Itaewon allow you to deposit funds into a person's account without an ID or an account. Some may charge a small fee for the deposit. You complete the deposit slip and provide it to the teller with the money. Itaewon banks have a deposit slip example translated into English. I don't have either ID or an account and have been successful using the KB Bank in Itaewon to make deposits for these trips.
