Be an Elf on Santa's Train!

Now looking forward to its 13th annual run, KCS' Holiday Express is a six-car train that brings Santa Claus and his elves to communities throughout the U.S. network at scheduled stops. These events are free and open to the public. No tickets are required.

The Holiday Express also has a charitable component. At each scheduled stop, The KCS Charitable Fund makes a contribution of gift cards to the local Salvation Army to provide warm clothing and other necessities for children in need. Over the past 12 years, thanks to the generous contributions of KCS’ employees, vendors and friends, the Holiday Express has donated over $1.2 million in gift cards to this cause.

This year the Holiday Express will be at Union Station for 5 days and hopes to break a record 15,000 visitors! We would love ServeKC to sponsor a shift ON THE TRAIN! Responsibilities will be escorting guests through the train, passing out goody bags, and helping with strollers.

I wasn't an elf, but those who were did a great job.

I have guests all day on the 22nd. Does anyone know if an individual can volunteer for another day?

    December 6, 2013

    • Rebekah C.

Hi Denise, I would be happy to have you volunteer on another day. The event is the 18th-22nd. Please message me or email me at [masked] to find another time that would work for you.

Sorry. The way things are looking I won't be able to make in the morning. I apologize for any inconvenience.

    Hi Rebekah Canales:

"Please come to the Information booth 15 minutes before the shift is scheduled to start. We will all meet there. Park in the garage on the West side of the building. I will give you a voucher to pay for your parking. Dress is Holiday preferred. Jeans are fine."

Q 1: Do you mean the round information counter in the main lobby of Union Station (where the tourism literature is), or is there an information booth somewhere else specifically for the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express?

Q 2: If so where is that information booth?

Q 3: Also, how do we get to trackside?

Thank you in advance for your kind attention to these questions.

I wish you the absolute best of luck in this event and in all of your future endeavors.

    Sincerely,

    Ken

Rebekah, when I got home, which was a scary enough trip, it took a half hour just to get up my driveway and into the garage. I can't see it getting better by morning. I hate to have to cancel, but this weather is not cooperating.

  • Cathie B.

I'm so sorry, but it's all ice over here, and with the temps not improving, I can't see getting out on it in the morning.

    December 21, 2013

  • Colleen K.

So what's the weather contingency? I live an hour away, on a normal day, and I'd hate to try and make the track through the morning muck to find the event cancelled. Also won't know wisdom of driving till we see what roads look like in the morning.

I am so absolutely bummed I can not help out tomorrow. But woke up with a sore throat and fever this morning =( So I best cancel so I don't spread more than Christmas cheer!

All, I apologize about the attachment. Since everyone is on the same shift (Sunday 9:20-1pm) and has the same job, you don't really need the attachments. If anyone is interested in signing up for an additional/different shift let me know and I can send you the schedule. Sorry about the confusion! Rebekah

Rebekah, You sent me an email that said it had an attachment....there was no attachment. I sent you an email letting you know this and have not heard back from you. Please get me the attachment as soon as you have time.

    Thank you,

Hi Rebekah, I didn't receive the attachment either and don't believe Meetup messaging allows attachments. We could upload the schedule to Google Drive and share the link with everyone. Email me if you need help.

Thank you Rebekah, I got it! I sent you a reply and my phone number if you need it. Can't wait to help out Sunday! :-)

Rebekah, I'm a friend of Kenan's from the BrickLab. I know for that stuff you have to go through a process to be a volunteer. Is that true for this event too? I'd love to help out with this, but have not done the volunteer process yet. Let me know. Thanks!

    December 11, 2013

    • Colleen K.

Cool beans! :) I'm trying to get a friend to do it with me. Should know by later today!

      December 12, 2013

Friend can't make it, so it will just be me.

  • Kathy

I'd love to do this, but let me look at how the weather is doing that day. Can I?

    December 6, 2013

    • Rebekah C.

Kathy, you can sign up closer to the day. I am not going to close this sign up because if we get more than 15 volunteers we will use you elsewhere.

Rebekah, I'd be available the afternoon of the 22nd if you need help then.

    December 8, 2013

    • Rebekah C.

Sure, that would be great! We have an afternoon shift from 1:00pm-5:00pm. Can you PM me your email so that I can get you on the schedule as an individual?

      December 10, 2013

  • Paul Z.

I am a regular volunteer @ Union Station, so I've added this event to my schedule.

    December 6, 2013

  • Selena

Sound fun and I'm sure Serve KC can take a shift. Is the 9am-1pm slot one shift? How many people do you need and are there any dress requirements/recommendations?

    December 6, 2013

    • Rebekah C.

      Hi Selena,
Great questions! You can tell you've done this before. The 9am-1pm is one shift. We have a total need of 15 people minimum, so I am leaving it open in case others would like to join as well. As far as dress I would recomend holiday/red/green if you have it. Not too big of a deal if you don't though.
