Habitat BUILD Workday

Habitat for Humanity KC is a non-profit Christian ministry working to fulfill the dream of home ownership for low-income families in the Kansas City metro since 1979. Habitat builds affordable, energy-efficient homes in the inner city for sale at 'no profit, no interest' to qualified families.

BUILD Volunteers — Construction skills are not needed, but FULL DAY commitment is required starting at 8:00am - 3:30pm. Volunteers need to arrive promptly to allow time for sign in, house assignment, task distribution and the morning safety meeting. We'll also be given a half hour lunch break at 11:30am.

          ****  STRONG COMMITMENTS ONLY!  ****

Specific details on the work we'll be doing will be emailed prior to our event and may vary depending on what the volunteers ahead of us accomplished, what needs to be done and what supplies are available. The type of work volunteers help with include preparing the lots, painting, siding, framing and tiling; just to name a few.

AGE REQUIREMENTS — Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work on the construction site. Under 18 must have a waiver and release form signed by a parent or guardian prior to volunteering.

WHAT TO BRING — Please bring a lunch and any snacks or drinks you may want. Water will be provided on site in large jugs (refillable bottles are encouraged).  Check the weather report and bring things appropriate for the day - rain gear, sunscreen, insect repellent, hats, or extra layers of clothing may be useful to have with you.

DRESS — Volunteers must wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and should bring work gloves. Dress appropriately for construction and wear clothing/shoes you don't mind getting dirty, muddy or paint on. No open toed shoes, sandals, slippers or crocs. Shorts are also discourage. Be aware that if it has been raining, the construction sites will be muddy.

TOOLS — Habitat KC provides most tools, however, due to their limited supply of tools we encourage you to bring your own tools if possible.  A good general tool belt to bring would include a hammer, level, tape measure, pencil, speed square, and box knife. Mark your personal tools clearly so they don’t get mistaken for others when cleaning up at the end of the day.  Habitat KC will also gladly accept tool donations.

Additional information in the Habitat KC Volunteer Manual.

** Please be firm with your commitment when you RSVP.  Habitat plans our work based upon the number of volunteers they expect.  If your plans change we understand, just please change your RSVP so that someone else can go. ** Thank You!

Thomas from Habitat sent me some of the photos they took during our Build day and I just uploaded them to the site. Such a hard working group of volunteers!

Thank you for a great build!! We had a full day starting with some demo as we tore off old trim and preped the house for siding, put in a window and got a good start getting the siding up. Getting to know some of our new members also made this a great day as well as seeing familiar faces. We have 2 more builds coming up, but there are also our 2nd & 4th Saturday ReStore events that we'd love to see at soon. I'll also post our group photos on the Serve KC Facebook too, please tag and share to get the word out about what great work we do.

Where is the Habitat Headquarters? What time are we meeting there? I realize you probably already sent out this information but I was just now able to RSVP. I'm looking forward to helping.

Thanks for RSVPing. The headquarters is the address listed on the meetup: 1423 East Linwood Boulevard, Kansas City, MO and we meet at 8am. I sent out an email earlier this week asking people to update their rsvp and letting everyone know that we're going to be working on siding. Everything else you need to know is in the event details! Let me know if you have any questions. And Welcome to Serve KC

Hope everyone's set and ready to work on putting up siding tomorrow. It's going to be a beautiful day, high of 70, so don't forget to dress in layers and you may even want to bring sunscreen and a hat. We'll be meeting at Habitat Headquarters, then carpool to the job site. If you have any questions email or call me. Thanks!

I don't have a tool belt. Will that be an issue?

    March 13, 2014

    • Michelle

I don't recall an email about what we need to bring or other details. Did I miss it?

      March 13, 2014

    • Selena

Hi Michelle -- Good to see your signed up for Saturday, it's been awhile since I've seen you. No, that won't be an issue. There's a blurb about Tools in the event details for anyone that might have and be able to bring a tool belt, but it's by no means required. I don't have a belt either.

I've got a house full of company next weekend and won't be able to work this but I have worked on 4 Habitat builds and it is one of my favorite volunteer activities! I hope we are able to do more in the future.
