Sweet Potato Harvest - Kansas City Sweet Potato Project

The beautiful sweet potato plants we planted in June actually made it through the summer and are ready for harvest!  We will dig up the sweet potatoes and donate them to Harvesters for distribution to local kitchens and food pantries.  Bring a spading fork to dig potatoes if you happen to have one.  No gardening experience necessary!

The 2012 Kansas City Sweet Potato Project is a collaborative partnership of Food Not Lawns Kansas City, Society of St Andrew West, Troost Village Community Association and Squash Blossom Food Cooperative. This year’s goal is to grow 10,000 lb of sweet potatoes for Harvesters. Normally I would ride a motorcycle on such a beautiful day but if you still need, I can drive my truck and bring a spade or two, rakes and loppers or pruning sheers.

I am sorry to say I will no longer be able to attend the harvest on Sunday, but Selena has graciously stepped up to be our fearless leader! I am still available for questions and please still let me know if you can bring any tools or a vehicle to help move potatoes or vines. Happy digging!

    Greetings Sweet Potato Harvesters!
This is shaping up to a be a great event for a beautiful fall day. Please note the time change. We will start harvesting at 10:00 AM. If you can't make it till 11:00, not a problem, just join us when you can. We will meet at the corner of 9th and Oak.
We are looking for tools to help with the harvest:
"diggers" or spading forks, they look like short, broad tine pitch forks, these will be our main harvesting tool so we need as many as we can!
    Pruning sheers
bushel baskets, laundry baskets, 5 gal buckets, etc. for removing the vines from the area
We are also looking for trucks or large vehicles to move the vines to a compost area a few miles away as well as moving the potatoes to a curing location at 31st and Troost.
Please let me know if you will be able to bring any of the above tools or have a vehicle that could transport.
Thank you for being a part of the Kansas City Sweet Potato Project!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
