Wine + Appetizers: MEASURE FOR MEASURE - BBC Shakespeare 1979

  • Dec 22, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

** OPEN to members who have attended at least one reading session of "Measure for Measure."
A chance to mingle and socialize, while watching an interesting 1979 BBC version of the play that includes a fascinating "Isabella", played by Canadian actress Kate Nelligan.
BBC stage productions are different to feature film productions - I'm personally, surprised no-one's made a feature film of this play - but some wonderful acting in this one!

Location will be finalized later and given to members individually (in Chevy Chase.) I usually ask members to bring either some "wine" or an "appetizer" of your choice!

Looking forward to wrapping up the Play!

Thanks,
Afsaneh

Enjoyed the opportunity to see a different interpretation of the play -- having seen it at the end of August and again in mid-September, and then having had a chance to read it and discuss it with the Meetup group. A very pleasant way to end our study of this play. Eagerly looking forward to reading and discussing Richard II.

Thanks for all your "goodies" and great wine. I hope you enjoyed Isabelle, Angelo, and Lucio as much as I did - even if watching this 1979 version on the computer. One of my favorite lines remains:
"Ever till now, when men were fond, I smiled and wondered how" - from the moment when Angelo admits to himself he's fallen for Isabelle, and we find out it's the first time he finds himself in love in a way that had up to then seemed silly to him.

Thanks for the hospitality and the fascinating discussion of the various interpretations of Measure for Measure. The 1979 performance had a very strong Isabel. Angelo was wonderfully malevolent. The Duke's portrayal seems to vary from production to production.

    Looking forward to Richard II.

You're welcome. I do think the discussions often end up being "fascinating." See you for our Richard II gatherings!

I hope everyone has fun tonight. I am in New Jersey for a few days -- was hoping to make it back on time, but am stuck here due to delays on some pressing matters. Sad to miss again, but hoping for an easier schedule and more Shakespeare meeting up soon.

I saw Peter O'Toole at Stratford, England as Shylock in Merchant of Venice. Despite being quite young then, he was a fabulous Shylock. And I was just in Ouarzazate, Morocco where they filmed Lawrence of Arabia.

We should drink a toast to Peter O'Toole, one of the last great actors of his generation.
